i think it's eddie playing either on the highest or lowest keys of the piano which is run through his effects and amp (which it is running through the entire song). I think that when he hits these keys the flanging is more noticeable because the notes are less audible as they are extremely high or low - like the sound at the beginning of How may say I? - and the flanging effect dominates the sound. It's also possible he's stepping on the pedal for extra effect during that section.

Yes that is correct! When they play it on tour they have the keys piped in, and Ed plays lead along with the track! the main riff is all keys!

I remember Eddie saying in an interview that he plugged a keyboard into a distorted Marshall to get the sound. The intro has a flanger on it. He said that he just laid his arm across the keys and banged on it ... and combined with the flanger and distortion it provided the effect in the beginning of the song.

i was actually able to do something in Garageband to get that sound. i recorded my keybord, pitched it up an octave and added flange and overdrive effects and it came out really close to what they have on tour.

Funny thing about Cradle, I've never really gotten all that excited about the song. Good song of course, but I've never had it in my top 20 VH songs. But after seeing it twice last month on tour I can't stop listening to it. I've had that song just ripping in the car a few times the past couple of weeks. I've totally found a whole new appreciation for it.

VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

Funny, I have been the same way. I never cared for it before, but the live version just rips. If there is any song I would they have made better than it used to be, its that song. The smoke on the water stuff at the end is a nice touch too.

The song shouldn't even be in the Setlist....but I'll tell you what song I have a new appreciattion for because of the way they are performing it live on this tour?.....I'LL WAIT...I LOVE the way Dave sings that song live....if they recorded that ONE song as a LIVE single I would buy it in a second....the ending their doing live for that song alone gives me goosebumps...

    Really?

From the first time I heard it I've always loved the song. It was awesome live and really was a highlight of the night for me. But I didn't think Dave sang it any better than on the album because I thought there were moments when he didn't quite hit the notes. The original studio version is still the best to me.
