Jump in C#?? (Higher key for Dave???)

I noticed when listening the video and boots of the recent tour that the Key of JUMP was raised. I was a bit surprized. :P

Would someone please confirm that Jump has been raised for C to C#....??

Did DLR do it in C# in his solo tours?

VH typically plays at a half step lower. Guitars are tuned down a half step ( Eb - Ab - Db....). If you try to play along on your guitar you'll need to play a half step higher....which is probably the case if you're trying to play along on your guitar.

I played a C# on my keyboard and it matched what was on Youtube, so for the actual tone it is C#.

So if they tune the guitar down anyway, why play the song in the actual tone C#? which is a half step up from the original?

I'm not talking about guitar position anyway, bottom line is, the song was in C on the album and here the ACTUAL tone is C#. Odd.

They haven't transposed it down, they transposed it up.

BTW the bluegrass version on the Tonight Show is in C.

now that is really interesting. i have not tested it by listening and then playing my keyboard yet. i've played piano/keyboards for 20 years, mostly billy joel type stuff. as a wannabe vocalist, i find myself transposing DOWN all the time because i can't get very high. it always shocks me that several DLR/VH songs are actually pretty darn high. I'll wait for one, parts of Jump, I'm the One, I think little guitars too. Anyway, i could see taking them down, but not up, strange that he likes it that way.

I was thinkin that during jump Dave struggles the most with "can't ya see what I mean?" the mean part - - maybe he said 'screw it, do it a half step up to help me nail that note'.

My friend mentioned he noticed the key change at the show, and thought it might have been in D, but I guess it is C#.

So the next question, what about the other songs, are they a half step down, or in standard 440, or what?

They've been doing Jump in D for years with Sammy so I guess they actually tuned it down a half step for Dave...LOL!

From what I could tell the other tunes were a half step down. I don't know why they'd do jump in C# as opposed to C. Maybe I'll go back and check some of the Roth boots to see what key he has been singing Jump in the past few years. Seems a bit odd to me.

I haven't heard the audio, but does it sound like it's the right/normal tempo? It could be that the audio is sped up just enough to change the key.

With the keyboard to the stage-left in the monitor-board area the jury is still out on whether the music is canned or played by another person.

Like sixstring said, they played Jump in D with Sammy for years, and on the '04 tour they played it in C# since Ed and Mike tuned down half a step.

interesting you should say that because everytime Ive heard VH play Jump with Sam the keyboards always sounded like they were in a higher key ...Ive mentioned it to other people many times so apparently this is nothing new

I've only checked out one boot of "Jump" from the new tour, but it was in B--a half step lower than the album. I seriously doubt they'd raise it for Dave like they did Sammy.

    Then something's goofy, we're all hearing C#.
