    Default Weight Training and Protein

I just started weight training again this week. The last time I was training, I tried some whey protein powder and it gave me stomach cramps so I quit taking it.

This time, in an effort to avoid this issue, I purchased 100% egg protein powder. It contains no whey or lactose. 3 hours after ingesting it, I had the same issue. It's been a couple of years since the whey stuff but I think this may have hurt more.

Has anyone else ever had this issue? Does anybody have any idea what could be causing the cramping? I would really like to keep taking extra protein but I can't if it's going to hurt like that each time. I also don't want to keep buying different kinds to try and wasting them as they're not cheap.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried asking someone at a store like GNC.
You can try getting extra protein the old fashion way but then your ass will probably hurt!

    Here's the type that I recommend: Syntha-6

It's very smooth and doesn't clump-up when you mix it with only a spoon.

You have to be very carefully, when picking out protein powder. The majority of them contain "fillers" that you don't need. The one's that are pure protein are going to be more expensive.

Believe me when I say.....try Syntha-6 (Chocolate flavor). It's actually the best tasting and easiest to mix.

I've been down this road so many times, it's not even funny.

I've never tried that Syntha-6, but I've had luck with Designer Whey Protein. I know exactly what you mean, I've had cramps and all kinds of problems with other brands, but I have no issues with Designer Whey.

I would also take an amino acid supplement like "Amino 1900" to fill in the blanks of the incomplete proteins you eat through-out the day...

Let me know if you have any other questions about that stuff... I got way into weightlifting when I was 19, and have pretty much tried every technique/workout/supplement in the last 15 years... At this point, I pretty much know what works, what doesn't, and what is bullshit.

Totally agree on the aminos. They also help your body process the protein you are putting in your system.

By the way, how much protein are you putting in your system? The proteins that say 50+ grams per serving are VERY suspect.

I always go with the leaner proteins. While you are getting less per serving, it's much easier on your stomach.

Last, I highly recommend you talk with someone about how much protein you REALLY need. At one point, I was taking in so much protein that my doctor told me I was at risk from getting "protein poisoning".

Don't take in more than your body can handle.

Protein poisoning can cause really bad diarrhea and other issues.

Screw the stuff from GNC. Just go out and buy a big hunk of beef and throw it on the grill.

If you wanna buy products from GNC, that's fine. However, I wouldn't ask them for any advice. It's like going to Comp USA and asking a computer question. Most the advice you will get is complete crap.

    Ask a trainer or dietitian.

Question to EJC, as you have aged (recovery time and metabolism changes), has your training regimen changed? Also what about diet?

Aboslutely... When I was 19, I trained 6 nights a week and recovery time was minimal. In my 5 years at college, I went from 150lbs to 210lbs without using steroids

I think I peaked at about 27 years old. I was easily hitting over 300 on bench, and didn't even know what an injury was...

Right after that, my knees/shoulders started to act up so I switched from Squats to Leg Press (which I still do), and started training with more Hammer-Strength and machines and backed off the Free-Weights a bit.

I've been doing M-W-F nights for about the last 7 years and that gives a recovery day between work-outs and I feel alot better. I hit Chest/Tri's on Monday, Back/Bi's on Wednesday, and Shoulders/Legs on Friday.

I've stopped trying to max out every week, and just do 225 on the bench for sets of 6-8 so I don't stress my shoulders too much. Same with everything else... A warm up set of 10 reps, then about 8 sets with 6-8 reps moderate weight...

My diet is whacked because I'm a vegetarian so I don't get my protein the traditional way...

After the gym, I eat a protein bar and a Designer Whey shake with Amino tablets... (I take 12 of the Amino 1900's per day)

Like BigD guy said, you don't want to take in too many grams of protein. I think your body can only convert 40 grams at a time or something... I've never taken in more than 100 grams a day, and I've been between 205-210 for the last 12 years or so... I think my kidneys would fall out if I took the "required" 230 grams of protein a day for someone my weight.

Since I stopped eating meat, i only lost a few pounds... It's not the way for everybody, it's just a personal choice thing...

I lived in Charlotte for a long time... I used to work out at Peak Fitness in Harrisburg and Matthews...

You may just have to experiement until you find one you like.
That can be expensive, I know, but generally the soy or egg
based mixes are NASTY, while the whey varieties are much
better. Also, vanilla seems to be more condusive to mixing
with various fruits and liquids than the chocolate. And the latter
seems more prone to clumping up for some reason. Let us know
what you find, I'm actually getting too skinny and have been off
the protein smoothies for a while...
