Default the pr war: vh 04 vs vh 07

i am struck by the silence from the band since the press conference only because dave is involved now...when u look at it objectively-they did more in 04 then they are now in attempting to promote the tour:

    in 04 they:

actually had a bunch of publicity shots of the actual group

    the group included michael anthony

ed did an actual interview in guitar world

they did 3 new tunes-i know they weren't popular but they actually did record something-they could atleast record 1 tune now and put it on itunes

the tour is way shorter unless this is simply the 1st leg to see if they implode[about 30 shows vs 80 total in 04]

    where is the merchandise?

    where is dave?

what is the actual purpose of this tour other than to play the classic stuff 1 last time w/wolfie?

ed said they will continue but really, does anyone believe that?

the best pr right now is people outside the band reviewing rehearsals

i'm seeing them november 1 in dc out of curiosity sake at this point to see where it can go from here

love vh and recommend the new book 'everybody wants some-the vh saga'

when you look at it objectively you might notice that despite no interviews/ no new songs/ no mike that they are not having trouble selling tickets. Maybe they don't want to do interviews or maybe they've decided that things are going well and that opening their mouths would only hurt ticket sales.

    as for your questions:

    where is the merchandise?

I'm sure there will be plenty - we'll see at the show

    where is dave?

he's the blond guy singing at rehearsals

what is the actual purpose of this tour other than to play the classic stuff 1 last time w/wolfie?

same purpose as 2004 - to make some money.

ed said they will continue but really, does anyone believe that?

    some do and more don't.

The less talking we hear from Eddie VH the better.

Let the music do the talking.

Yeah, there is no denying that they SERIOUSLY dropped the ball PR wise this time around and it is reflecting in the lack of mass sell outs. They should be selling out all of their shows, but other than us and a few local articles in newspapers (who reads those anymore), there hasn't been ANY effort to get the word out.

I'll give props for the PC, but that should have been the first in a LONG line of events and appearances by VH to get a serious buzz going. Granted that buzz may pick up tomorrow after a review comes in, but I think it is more likely to stay level or drop off entirely (if that's even possible).

Compare this to Motley Crue a few years back. They had more people excited about that who previously had no idea who the hell they were just because of all the different promoting they did.

It's sad, but then again, it's Van Halen.

My friend works as a newspaper writer and he contacted VH's publicist in hopes of doing an interview with one of them as the tour gets closer to Boston. She said they weren't doing an interviews for this tour. They probably don't want to here the same old questions. (ie: Why will it work this time when it hasn't in the past? Why isn't Mike in the band anymore?) I think they held the press conference as a one and only to satisfy the press. They really don't need to do any press/promotions because every show is selling out quickly. Somebody else on this site mentioned how the press conference questions seemed to be a little staged. As I watched the press conference a second time, it did seem that way. Maybe they planted certain people in the crowd and only took their non confrontational questions. Evan Stone, the porn star was one who asked a question. Eddie then mentioned he is friends with him. It kinda makes sense. It's better than Eddie doesn't talk at all. Whenever he speaks publicly he makes an ass out of himself with his strange behavior.

I think we can all sadly come to expect that the Van Halen formula is how to make the most amount of money out of the least amount of effort.

Believe me, if they thought they could re-package something and throw a couple new songs on it and sell a million copies they would. But how many greatest hits packages in a row can you have without new material somewhere in between?

Have you heard any of Ed's interviews lately? Would you want him on air? "The tree doesn't fall very far from the nut" kind of talk doesn't make people line up to buy tickets.

I'd rather that they don't do much radio promotion actually, because it would be Dave talking all day long, and many singers have said that it is not as much the touring that fried their voice but talking in interviews all day before hand that did them in.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I could really give a rats ass. Turn on the radio, VH is everywhere. My local station plays classic stuff thru new and VH is is played alot. Just this morning I heard 'Drop Dead Legs' and 'Ice Cream Man'. Hell, 'I'll Wait' is on right now! These guys don't need alot of PR. Look at all they have had the past 10 years. Tomorrow, history will be made!!!

I guess they're satisfied with the level of ticket sales. If they weren't they would probably try to get their name out there more.

Something tells me Dave isn't exactly mute when not on radio. He strikes me as the type of person who would sit in his room and practice on liners into the mirror for about 7 hours straight.

    Default sellouts?

will be curious to see the numbers for the 1st 10 to 12 shows and how well they did.

they won't even bother to talk to their fans in any capacity and yet we [including myself] shelled out a fortune for the 4th version of this band playing songs that are 23-30 years old?

yeah-it's cool, for now-but dave sold out letting wolfie play, and al is a tool, and ed is a drunk, so they've got nothing to say.

all over the radio? not here...no ads, no pub, again, let's see how many venues do better then the last time around...i doubt it will be much different-it's like they have become a supergroup w/nothing new to offer-weak-and that is from a die hard all-time fan....

Well in Cleveland the week before tickets went on sale, they were doing ads on the radio. Radio contests and such as well. However Cleveland is basically sold out unless you want to go in the nosebleeds and almost behind the stage. Was not like that in 2004.

The "fortune?". I would not call $130 for decent tickets a fortune. They were 50 dollars for the cheapest tickets and I paid that to see 311 this year for general admission.

Compared to 1984 its a fortune but nobody plays for $15 in an arena anymore.

VH at this moment is not talking because they will not benefit from it. Shows are selling out or selling at a better rate than 2004. Any answer they give towards Mike, Sam or Global Warming will be analyzed to death. Of course they could have done new songs but how did that work out the last two times?

Dave recorded in 96 and did we get a tour?
Sam recorded in 2004 and we got a lousy tour with some lousy songs.

If VH was serious about this being a new start, then the best thing they could do, IMO, is keep quiet and let the music do the talking. Their public perception is in serious need of rehabilitation. A tour with good reviews would be a good start.

Take a look at the other thread about the Village Voice article. Granted, its the VV which will never have a VH fan on its staff. But I could imagine a similar cynical tone coming from a Rolling Stone article. Other than the guitar-centric magazines, what other media outlets in the U.S. would publish an interview/article that would benefit VH at this point?

I recall Aerosmith having a similar problem in 84/85 when Perry and Whitford returned to the band. At that point, they were perceived as has-beens. What press they did get was minimal and portrayed them as 70's relics. Now the circumstances of their resurrection differ to what is possible with VH in this day/age, but ultimately, it was Aerosmiths music and performances that revitalized them.

I'm hopeful that this a new beginning, knowing that this could also be a last hurrah. In either case, I feel the less they open their mouths, the better.

Is it just human nature to find competition in everything? It's always "this" versus "that" with VH fans. 2004 versus 2007? Who fucking cares? Is validation needed or something? And it's lots more than just PR that will affect ticket sales; prices, venue, date, other touring acts, etc. all have an impact on overall ticket sales. The 2007 VH tour will be a success on many levels, but it won't be the gigantic "re-take the world" event some have imagined it should/could be.
