    Default Another student/teacher sex case

Teacher charged with having sex with teen

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- A former teacher was charged with having sex with a teenage boy, the third teacher in the same county accused of such crimes in the past year and a half, authorities said Monday.

Karen Robbins is the third teacher in the area to be charged with having sex with a teenager.

Karen Robbins, 49, was arrested over the weekend and charged with three counts each of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and committing a lewd act on a child.

The sex occurred with a 15-year-old in her car and twice at her home between September and November 2005, according to arrest warrants.

Robbins was a private school teacher at the time, and officials said the accusations did not involve one of her students.

Robbins was released from jail on a $90,000 bail.

Messages left at a telephone listing for a Karen Robbins in Clinton and with the county public defender's office were not immediately returned.

Police said they began investigating after school officials turned over letters in July found at Bell Street Middle School, where Robbins worked during the 2006-2007 school year.

Earlier this month, Allena Ward, also a former Bell Street Middle teacher, pleaded guilty to having sex with five teenage boys, some of them students where she taught.

Wendie Ann Schweikert, a former elementary school teacher in Laurens County, was sentenced in June to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to having sex with an 11-year-old student. Ward has not yet been sentenced.

"You're concerned as a parent. You're concerned as a citizen and concerned as a prosecutor that these events keep being uncovered," said solicitor Jerry Peace, who prosecuted Ward and Schweikert.

The now-17-year-old boy in Robbins' case, a former student at Bell Street Middle, is cooperating with authorities, Peace said.

Not to be outdone, South Florida steps up to the plate...

Drama teacher accused of sex with student is jailed indefinitely

By Missy Diaz | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
    September 25, 2007

An 18-year-old who said she began a sexual relationship with Santaluces High School drama teacher Andrew Foster when she was 16 testified Monday that she loved him deeply.

The tall and slim teenager, now a college student, spoke during a pretrial detention hearing for Foster, who stared blankly at the floor from a seating area for prisoners. He's being held in the Palm Beach County Jail on charges that he engaged in sexual activity with two students. Authorities are investigating the possibility of a third student with whom he had sex.

The teen said she fell in love with Foster, now 27, and dated him for more than a year. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is not identifying her because of the nature of the charges. She said she waited for some time to begin a sexual relationship with Foster and when it did become intimate, it was "out of love and being convinced we'd be together forever."

She said the two had sex on a regular basis at the school, located west of Lantana. Had their relationship ever been revealed, they planned to flee to New York, England or Puerto Rico, she said.

After hearing from the state and the defense, which asked for a $25,000 bond, Circuit Judge Lucy Chernow Brown announced that Foster would be held without bail because he's a flight risk and a danger to the community.

He faces multiple charges, including unlawful sexual activity with a minor, child abuse, transmission of pornography by electronic device and transmission of material harmful to minors.

The judge did not permit the teen to answer questions from defense attorney Mark Solomon about whether the relationship was consensual, explaining that a 17-year-old does not have the legal right to consent to sex with an adult.

School District Police Detective Vinny Mintus told the judge that the teen provided information about her relationship with Foster on Sept. 3 after finding out he was cheating on her. Foster allegedly got her pregnant and signed a consent form so she could have an abortion.

"There seems to be a pattern here of grooming these students," prosecutor Daliah Weiss said. "And because he's in a position of custodial authority, they look up to him and are more apt to do what he wants."

At a meeting at the teen's house, at which her mother and 10 students were present, police had her phone Foster while they monitored the conversation, according to a detective. But during the call one of the other students text-messaged Foster and tipped him off that he was being trapped. The call ended and Foster went on the run, according to police.

His car was found at the Fort Lauderdale airport, and his cell phone was tracked to Indiana, Ohio and Kissimmee before he was apprehended Friday at a Budget Inn in Immokalee.

Defense attorney Mark Solomon said his client comes from a solid family with no criminal history. He insisted that Foster did not flee authorities but was taking time to get a defense together and negotiate a surrender.

Despite the age difference and legal ramifications, Foster and the girl fell in love, Solomon said.

"It's a theme that goes back to Shakespeare," he said.

Foster's parents, Al and Cheryl Foster, traveled to West Palm Beach from their home in Fort Wayne, Ind., Monday to support their son, who they characterized as a "wonderful man" who graduated from a Christian college, where he was active in a Christian organization while playing baseball and participating in the drama club.

Nothing in his upbringing or his past indicates that he would prey on teenage girls for sex, they said.

"All of his girlfriends and friends are women his own age," said Al Foster, a machinist.

Foster is being held in an individual cell at the jail because "he's a frail individual and because of the nature of the crime," Solomon said.

His parents said they have to get back to work and cannot afford to stay in Florida until the disposition of the case. Al Foster worries for his son's safety.

"He's tougher than he looks ... but jail's no place for him. He's a sensitive and loving person."

Nebraska Teacher, 13-Year-Old Student, on the Run in Colorado

LEXINGTON, Neb. Authorities were looking in several states for a 13-year-old boy and a 25-year-old middle school teacher Thursday, on the run after police began investigating a relationship between the pair.

Kelsey Peterson, a sixth-grade teacher and basketball coach at Lexington Middle School, was placed on administrative leave last week, and police issued a warrant for her arrest on Monday. She is wanted on suspicion of child abuse, child endangerment and kidnappping, authorities said.

Police believed she was traveling with 13-year-old Fernando Rodriguez, and court documents showed authorities had recovered several e-mails and letters between the two from the school and Peterson's father. In them, Rodriguez and Peterson professed their affection for one another.

The Associated Press and FOXNews.com are identifying the 13-year-old even though it is alleged that he is the victim of child abuse because local officials believe it can help investigators locate the boy.

Rodriguez, while living at a home for at-risk boys in Alliance, called Peterson in letters his "Baby Gurl," and said their relationship was "just not about the sex but that it was pretty good," according to court documents.

The warrant charges Peterson with kidnapping, child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Court documents say Peterson's school-issued laptop contained letters where she said she loved the student.

Police said Rodriguez contacted his family over the weekend and said the two were in Grand Island, about 85 miles east of Lexington. Police also said the pair were apparently spotted Friday night at a Denver convenience store, then again Sunday in Ogallala, in western Nebraska near the northeast tip of Colorado.

Rodriguez called his mother and sister early Saturday and sent a text message to his brother, saying he was OK, police said. Police said he also called his aunt to ask whether a visa or passport was necessary to travel to Mexico.

When I was thirteen I would have given just about anything to just get to second base with more than a couple of my teachers. None of them looked like this sow.

I get that some half-way retarded emotionally starved ugly chick would need to resort to 13 year olds but damn...looking at it from the 13 year old's perspective, I just don't see it.

Teacher arrested in Mexico, boy released

By OSKAR GARCIA, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 52 minutes ago

LEXINGTON, Neb. - A teacher accused of running away with a 13-year-old student planned a romantic life with him in his native Mexico, but she was near broke when they were captured there, authorities said Saturday.

Their border crossing during a week on the lam may mean the teen, an illegal immigrant, will not be able to come back to the rural Nebraska town where he was an eighth-grader.

The boy's relatives told police he had called home asking for money, leading investigators to a shopping mall in the border city of Mexicali on Friday. Kelsey Peterson, 25, and Fernando Rodriguez, 13, were taken into custody without incident in the parking lot.

Peterson, a sixth-grade math teacher and basketball coach at Lexington Middle School, fled with the boy after police began investigating whether the pair had an intimate relationship, authorities said. Court documents said the boy was last seen Oct. 26.

An international hunt was under way after Peterson's car was spotted crossing into Mexico on Tuesday.

"They didn't have a very well-defined plan, it was basically to continue driving into Mexico to hide," said Alfredo Arenas, the Baja California state police official who detained Peterson. "This was a mutual agreement to flee after the story came out that they were having sex."

The Associated Press generally does not identify people who may be victims of sex crimes, but the boy's name had been widely publicized as police searched for him.

Peterson was turned over to the FBI early Saturday. The boy was turned over to relatives in Mexicali because he was an illegal immigrant in the United States and was not allowed to return, Arenas said.

Fernando's uncle, Pedro Raya, said he spoke to the boy Saturday and they agreed he would go to the family's rural hometown in the southern state of Guanajuato, mainly because of his immigration status.

"He's OK," said Raya, 47, of Yuma, Ariz. "I just told him to stay over there in Mexico and the FBI is going to take care of everything."

Dawson County Attorney Elizabeth Waterman said Saturday she knew about Fernando's immigration status but did not know how it was going to affect her case against Peterson.

"That's one of the things we need to evaluate so I really don't have an answer at this time," Waterman said. "I don't know if that information is completely accurate or if that's subject to change, but we're dealing with that."

Peterson is charged with kidnapping, child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in Nebraska. She's also faces federal charges of transporting a minor across state lines or a foreign border for sexual activity, U.S. Attorney Joe Stecher said.

Stecher said he didn't intend to double-prosecute Peterson, and would work with Waterman to decide in which jurisdiction she would face charges.

Court documents showed authorities had recovered several e-mails and letters in which Peterson and the boy professed their affection for one another.

In letters, the boy called Peterson his "Baby Gurl" and said their relationship was "just not about the sex but that it was pretty good," according to the court documents.

Fernando was an eighth-grader at Lexington Middle School, but district Superintendent Todd Chessmore said Rodriguez had been in Peterson's 6th-grade math class. He said he placed Peterson on paid administrative leave on Oct. 25.

Peterson's school-issued laptop contained letters to the student, including one from April saying she loved him, thought he loved her, was "100 percent faithful" to him and would always be faithful, the court documents state.

Laura Rodriguez also said the family believed Peterson gave the boy a cell phone without his family's knowledge so she could reach him more easily. There was no response to messages left for a cell phone listed to a Kelsey Peterson of Lexington.
