Default Where you'll notice a difference...

...on a new studio album. They'll probably pull it off live (except for the lack of body movement by Wolfgang), but not in the studio. No way in hell. It will probably sound like a Dave solo album. Somewhere in between EEAS and DLR Band.
I can't remember which comedian said it, about the current state of Van Halen, but he said right now, Van Halen is like a really hot playboy playmate with a prosthetic leg.

    BRING BACK THE CLASSIC LINEUP!

I can't even have an opinion on ANYTHING anymore unless it's exactly what everyone else thinks...oh and if I do it means I HATE this album, and hope it fails. Man some of you can fuck off...seriously. - BRETT

That's assuming, of course, that we'll get a new studio album.

That statement is retarded... Gee, I sure missed the vocal sound from 1985-2004.. now you're gonna bitch about high pitched backing vocals? Let's see -they can do it live, but they won't be able to produce an album with all of the studio technology in the world at their disposal? Pull your head out of Mikes and/or Sammys ass and get a clue.

Generally speaking the studio is a much easier setting for tweaking to get a particular sound. If anything, pulling something off live has always proved to be the tougher task. Unless you're Ashley Simpson....

Ummm...isn't Wolf like 17 years old?

I wasn't all that hot a player when I was 17, Wolf seems to be above average for his age. I wonder what Mike's abilities sounded like when he was 17?

Some of you guys even have your own 17 year-olds at home.

I couldn't disagree more. There is all kinds of stuff they can do to make an average studio vocal performance sound much better. Listening to Wolf live, he seems to have pretty good background vocals, so it wouldn't be hard to make him sound good in the studio. IF we get a studio release, it will sound exactly like VH, except with Wolf on bass. In fact, Mike's bass wasn't really heard on many VH recordings (like all of OU812!), and it seems that Mike didn't really contribute to the arrangement or writing of any songs, especially on the newer VH material, with Eddie supposedly playing bass on a lot of stuff since 3. Generally, if you can pull it off live, then you can pull it off in the studio. Like the first VH release, for example.

You guys do realize that the VH backing vocals much of the time weren't just Mike and Eddie, right?
They've had lots of folks doing backing vocals...Lukather was on IAT and Top of the World, among others.

Studio won't be a problem at all. Hell, a studio makes people like Britney Spears and NoAsslee Simpson sound like they can actually SING, so I'm sure some background harmonies won't be a problem.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

    true true.
I used to wonder why he was grinning all the time(Michael Ian Black talkin about EVH on VH1 I love the 80's) but then i realized the reason he's grinning is because he's Eddie F*#king Van Halen

I agree in the studio you could make anything sound polished and bring other backing vocals. As one poster pointed out, they even did that when Mike was in the band. Where I think you will notice the difference is when they kick into Running with Devil and a crazy man is not out there to pluck the bass cords with his teeth to send the crowd into a freenzy, or hit the chorus on a song like Jamie's Cryin', which is a big part to sound and feel of that song.

Again this not a knock against Wolfgang, just saying that Mike is as big a part of these songs as Ed, Dave, and Al are - because that was the band who created those songs. Say what you want, Mike's personality is injected into the performance of these songs through his vocals and stage presence. That was the band known as Van Halen 22 years ago.

Sure are a lot of amateur "experts" on studio and live applications here at The Links...

The familiar VH sound--which includes but is not exclusive to backing vocals--hasn't been in full existence since Balance and the '96 songs. We heard hints of it in the recordings since, but nothing all that complete. The reason: Van Halen was still writing and recording as a LIVE band. III and the BOBW songs were over-cooked studio songs. Many of them would have worked great as band songs; but they were instead built piece-by-piece--mostly by Ed. Could a new studio album have the old familiar VH vibe without the presence of Michael Anthony? Perhaps, but there are lots of factors beyond MA that would determine so. Recent studio precedent stacks the cards not in VH's favor.
