    Default Suggestions on VH Songs???

MY friend and I are looking to start a new band and we have found a bassist that is not adverse to doing some VH tunes...however I am a bit concerned on how to pull off some songs with 2 guitar players....anybody have any ideas on what songs might be good? Right now we're looking at playing Unchained and I'm the One for starters as I know my way around both of them pretty well....but for the future...does anybody have any ideas as to how to play VH songs with 2 guitars or what songs we could play....mind you we don't want to be a tribute/cover band....

Any help would be much appreciated....

Play Dirty Movies, one of you play slide and the other rhythm. That'd be epic. Also consider doing some random keyboard song like I'll Wait or Mine All Mine and arrange one guitar to play the keyboard parts.

EDIT: Play The Seventh Seal, it has two guitar parts. Usually live Ed(and myself) just combine the two but it sounds better with two seperate guitars.

That's a hell of a suggestion. Be all end all, I'd look at stuff with significant two guitar stuff, like Fools from WACF, lots of stuff from Fair Warning, Poundcake...there's other stuff from WACF, man, the whole thing is, considering, the second guitarists parts, going a la verbatim from the album, are going to be very sparse for almost any VH song in the Sacred 9 catalog

The tunes where Ed played a simple lead line (like "Dirty Movies," "Hear About It Later") are good candidates. "Poundcake" and the songs on FUCK had tons of guitar overdubs, so you'd probably be able to work out some stuff there.

Just don't go with both you guys playing the same thing. Bands with two guitarists who play the same thing are one of my bigger pet peeves.

^Agree totally, unless of course it's for some sort of effect like all of a sudden the bass and two guitars come together and play the same thing for a few measures then break off into their repective parts.

Yes, indeed; as part of the arrangement it can certainly be cool.

I transcribe a lot of songs for my students. For some reason the band that comes to mind when it comes to the "two guitarists playing the same thing" thing is Counting Crows. Hardly a guitar band, I know, but when I wrote out one of their songs a couple of weeks ago, I just sat shaking my head going: "So one guy strums the first positions chords with a busy-busy right hand while the other guy just strums the EXACT SAME CHORD on the one and holds it for the measure? Then they both go crazy-strum on the chorus? How's that interesting? Why the fuck even bother with guitarist #2? That's one more guy to cut in on residuals and per diem."

Amsterdam has two parts and do that cool thing during the solo where they come together with the bass and then break off. Why Can't This be Love's keyboard part could easily be played on guitar while one of you plays the regular guitar part. In N' Out has three guitar parts during some parts as does Humans Being.

you should email the old guitarist from Dave Lee Roth's band, Toshi something or other, he was the rhythm guitarist in the band...he was playing 100 percent of the time, on all of the van halen stuff...dont know what he was playing, but it could be a start...
Eddie and Dave...the way it was meant to be

You guys could play the Velvet Revolver versions of ATBL and Runaround around around around around around around around.

In all seriousness, Andrew makes a great point. Do a song where you can both play something a little different. Hell, why not experiment with a couple of tunes and see what you come up with?
