Default Melodicrock.com: some background vocals piped in

    From melodicrock.com:

"What I was told sometime back after the band ditched the idea of a backing vocalist hidden backstage, was that Eddie and Wolfgang Van Halen pre-recorded select backing vocals for use in a few vital spots, but otherwise vocals will all be handled on stage."

Not surprising since the bvs sound really close to the original ones, suspiciously close. And when EVH and WVH recorded the bv's at 5150, who's to say they didn't drop a little bit of MA bvs in the mix, for good measure. No one could ever tell for sure if it's mixed in.

Dave during all his solo days could never get bv this close to the original cvh sound, even with experienced musicians. His guys, be it Billy Sheehan or James Lomenzo could never approach Michael Anthony.

Now all of a sudden, a teenager with no experience comes close. Hmmm... ain't that a little strange?

Bottom line, we'll never know what percentage of bvs have been prerecorded, and what percentage is live.

Even if they are previously recorded, at least it's actually Wolfgang and Eddie. Still, I'd perfer it to be 100% live but VH hasn't done that since the Mid 80's.

Listen to these backups. You can hear Wolf's voice crack when he sings "understand". Then when he sings "girl" it sounds a little out of key. If these were taped, they left the imperfections on the recording.

If you are gonna quote the article, at least put the whole thing up, it's not that big. Of course you didn't though because the rest of the article doesn't lend itself to your motives.

MORE VAN HALEN YOU TUBE PREVIEWS:
More Van Halen rehearsal footage. Gotta say...the guys look and sound fantastic. David Lee Roth looks like a 30 year old....good luck to the guys.
There has been some debate and speculation about the backing vocals though - being as Michael Anthony is not involved. No his voice is not being piped in or used in any way. What I was told sometime back after the band ditched the idea of a backing vocalist hidden backstage, was that Eddie and Wolfgang Van Halen pre-recorded select backing vocals for use in a few vital spots, but otherwise vocals will all be handled on stage.

    Yup, select backing vocals.
I never said it was all piped in.
We don't know what's piped in and what's not. And we don't know for sure if it's only EVH and WVH in there. Because Van Halen hasn't exactly been entirely forthcoming during the last decade when communicating with us. So if it sounds too good to be true, well maybe it IS because it's too good to be true!

These sound like MA's vocals being piped in at the end of the clip. If not, then Wolf is nailing it pretty good.

(You get to enjoy Ed's solo too... always worth hearing to me.)

After regrettably hearing "How Many Say I", there's no way anybody can convince me that EVH contributed to the background vocals in the same level as Mighty Michael Anthony. Singing just ain't EVH's department.

It sure is awesome to see Diamond David Lee Roth fronting this new band. Hope all works out well for him and he doesn't get stabbed in the back. All the best to him.
    DLR, circa 2001:

"Hey this is David Lee Roth and I promised you the news and here's the news.

About a year ago myself and the great Van Halen band played together once or twice and it sounded amazing!

In the following several months Edward and I, Edward Van Halen and me, David Lee Roth, created some of the most amazing, phenomenal - the hands fell off the clock ladies and gentleman and we wrote three astonishing tunes.

That was last July (2000) and since then I haven't been up to the studio, we haven't really been in touch and we haven't made any music, but I am holding forth, I'm in the shape of my life and I got the high note - I'm ready to go.

And I am positive for the future ladies and gentleman.

Stay tuned and I'll tell you what the future brings..."

If they pipe in some prerecorded stuff with Ed and Wolf, I really don't have to much of a problem with that. Listening to the rehearsal clips, I could find a couple spots where they did that. Most of the time, it was Ed and Wolf. Don't forget that in some songs, Dave also sings some of the background vocals.

The true litmus test will be at the shows.

Seriously, who cares if they pipe in the background vocals? Most "acts" (and I use that term loosely) pipe in the whole damn show and they just lip sync.
