Firefighters use forklift to move 900-lb. man

LANSING, Michigan (AP) -- Firefighters cut a hole in the side of a house and used a forklift to extricate a 900-pound man from his second-floor bedroom after a visiting nurse became worried about his health.

Rescue workers were called in Tuesday by the nurse, who determined the 33-year-old man needed medical help, Fire Chief Tom Cochran said.

Cochran said the man had not left his home since 2003.

The man's brother, who lives with him, said he suffers from Prader-Willi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that creates a chronic hunger feeling that can lead to overeating and life-threatening obesity.

Rescue workers brought in a forklift, high enough to raise a platform to a hole cut into the wall of the house.

They covered the man with a blue tarp to shield him from onlookers and slid the platform onto a flatbed truck for a trip to Sparrow Hospital.

It's a shame the visiting nurse didn't get concerned for his health back when he was pushing...say...600 pounds.

I feel sorry for people like that. Its not a case of just putting the fork down for these people, they have a serious illness. It really is sad.

Being over-weight myself, and battling my weight for as long as I can remember; I don't feel sorry for anybody, including myself! We know what we are doing to ourselves. I'm not trying to sound like a prick, but it's the truth.

The only way you deal with something like this is practicing good eating habits, getting outside and knowing you don't have to depend on food for your happiness. Just like anybody with an addiction, you just have to conquer each day as it comes.

    My two cents!

Very true, I agree with you. Unless these people get help they will become morbidly obese. I am a alcoholic and until I got help I had no idea how to deal with my alcoholism, it was not a case of me going outside or drinking to moderation. I think these people are a special case, its not a case of self control, food to someone that is 900lbs is like a drug to them.

Hope your recovery is going well. I just have learned that through years of yo-yoing, that it gets harder to self medicate as you get older. I just know the next time I decide that I want to lose weight, it will be my last attempt for recovery.

I think any person who is heavy will tell you, that your worst day thinner is a hell of a lot better than your best day over weight!

And to those are happy being big; you're stronger than me!

I have a buddy that's an emt who works all kinds of shit as one could imagine. He called one night to inform me they had someone with, as he said. "Five foot of ass." He told me that the women literally had a little over 60 inches of ass. It's a crazy world out there. Out.

I shit you guys not. This is a true story.

I use to work in the hospital and one of my jobs was to take bodys down to the morgue. One day I got a call the come to the ER and right there in the middle of the floor is a guy flat on his back with a tract tube sticking out of his mouth. I look over at the nurse and ask her if he is dead. She says, "Yeah and you have to help move him."

Now I am 6'3 and this guys stomache come up past my knee as he is laying on his back on the floor. It took 12 Fire Fighters to drag him into the middle of the ER and they were all spent. We had to lift him like 3 feet onto a hospital bed so we could get him down to the morgue. We had to use a hospital bed because we didnt have any stretchers that would hold his weight.

I looked right at the nurse and the Firemen and said there is no way all of us could lift him dead weight 3 feet in the air. So I tell them we have a walk behind forklift in the stockroom that I know how to use and we can do it that way. The lift wouldnt fit down into the ER so I said we would need to put him on a pallet and drag him down to the stockroom with a pallet jack. So me and a few of the guys walk through my plan and they say lets try it cant hurt.

So here I am dragging a 700 some odd pound dead guy through the hallway on a pallet to the stockroom. I get him down there and slide the lift right under him and up he goes onto the hospital bed pallet and all so we can put him down in the morgue.

I felt really bad for the guy after all this. I have seen some real fucked up shit from my time in the hospital doing that job. I was there when his family came to see him. Very sad.
