    Default The Backup Vocal Issue

With so many Van Halen songs relying on tight harmonies during the chorus sections I really hope they tighten up the backups. They've done so much to improve, it would seem, and this would be the icing on the cake. It seems silly to ignore and a massively out of tune note sticks out like a sore thumb on these songs. Dave/Ed/Wolf - whoever is causing the problem needs to own up to it and stop singing notes he can't hit. It's a pain in the ass.

Other than that these are amazing videos. Thanks to all who posted.

It's pretty clear that Wolfie is holding his own. And if Al is singing too, you got three-part harmony with the same D.N.A.! They're like the heavy metal Beach Boys!
Wolfgang did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

I noticed an odd note in only one of the videos. Other than that, I havent heard anything that wouldnt be considered pretty darn good. Where does the idea that Al is singing come from? I've read that in other posts where people are questioning it, but when has he ever sung backing vocals on tour?
If it sounds like bull shit, feels like bull shit, and appears to be bull shit, it's probably Eddie talking about his new lead singer being his new brother at a press conference...

I think that "odd note" you heard was clearly Ed.

It sounded great to me, and when it's live it should sound even better! I've been to shows that Mike was out of tune with the others! Shit happens!
Is this giong to be the shit that didn't sound just like the recorded version tour? I hope people don't start posting that shit after the tour starts! I dont think i've ever been to a live show that someone didn't fuck up at least once!

When I wrote that I just finished listening to a chorus of Dance The Night Away that had a nails on a blackboard high note...I'll at least give it a pitch later...

I'm not expecting perfection at all and in fact enjoy the spontaneity being back again very much.

Hey I only realized later that this can be moved to the tour forum or closed if it's already there. Sorry mods.

The videos sounded fine to me. And hey, even Mike missed notes on a regular basis.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Well it has to be Ed or Dave because everybody knows they are piping in Mike's background

These are only rehearsal gigs. I would be more concerned about the band messing up during the actual live concert. No need to fret over small mistakes during rehearsals.

after watching the vidoes I have come to the conclusion that there is no issue with the background vocals. They sound just fine. Are they as good as they were in 1984? nope, and they wouldn't be if Mike was there either. We can nitpick everything apart (and some on here will) but this is better than any of us could have possibly expected. If they can consistently sound this good, this tour will be a huge success.

LMAO!! Uh, no it isn't true. They would be ruled by a click track in order to keep the piped in vocals in sync with the rest of them, and on most of these tunes it just wouldn't work, especially on something like the current version of Romeo Delight. Jump is the closest to this practice as you will see, and if I'm not mistaken I saw a pic of a keyboard backstage that someone is PLAYING.

No its not true. Somebody here who thinks they have an inside source stated it a month ago. The videos showed that he made it up.
