    Default Dav'e's Performance

Now, before I say this let me just say that I think they look and sound great but.... Dave seems a little stiff. Maybe it is the video's but he just seems to be walking around which to me was never dave. He always had that bigger than life attitude. O.k. everyone chime in...

He was playing for 300 people (friends and family show). I would be surprised if he was that stiff in front of 20,000 of his closest friends.
    Right here I say....

He's a lot older now than their hey-day. He hasn't ran around since the early '90's really, and that's actually allowed him to focus more on singing. He's also had back surgery and all sorts of minor injuries that have made him stop the jump-splits and high-flying kicks. When I saw him in '99, he was still attempting them, but they weren't very high and he looked like he was being VERY careful not to fall. We all get older, and I'm glad he's smart enough to realize he isn't young anymore. I'm sure there will still be some attempts to jump and run across the stage full-speed, but don't expect them to be as extravagant as they once were.

You are worried about Dave not having enough schtick? I think thats that last thing to worry about IMO

    Default Dave

It was just an observation. I saw the Dave/Sam tour and he seemed to moving around alot. Although, I will say his voice didn't sound as good as these videos. So maybe he is just trying to keep the focus there. I'm sure he knows people are watching to see how his voice sounds.

I wouldn't call it stiff. I think he is trying to be as faithful to the songs as possible, and I think he is spending a lot more effort on singing the songs correctly. In the past he used to just freak out and jump and scream all the time. Well, he can't jump that much anymore, and his scream has pretty much gone with age, so he has chosen wisely and is concentrating on the songs. I think he sounds great, better than he has in a long time. Dave knows there is a lot at stake here, and it looks like he is choosing not to forget the fucking words and to do the gigs sober. We'll see if that changes when the tour starts, but I don't think it will. I like this new Van Halen very, very much. I hope they continue like this.

You have to remember that these are only rehearsals. It's like the difference between practice for a sport and an actual game.

Everyone's involvement will be even more at the actual concerts.

Can you imagine what would happen around here if Dave injured himself while jumping from the drum riser during rehearsals? This site would explode! Especially since Eddie's rehab stint already pushed the start of the tour back and the whole RRHOF debacle! Don't worry about Dave's lack of acrobatics, remember what he said at the press conference,"I'm a lifelong martial artist, I've been practicing for this moment my whole life!" (or something to that effect). Dave is saving it up for gametime!

I was just thinking this same thing while watching the videos. Dave slowing down onstage seems to be part physical, but I'd bet it has more to do with concentrating on his lyrics and vocals.

I think everyone here is hitting the nail on the head. We have not yet seen Roth "perform" in this band, we have only seen him rehearse. He has always been one to feed off the crowds energy.

I expect to see him move around a bit more, but not at the rate he used to. Not only are his legs 23 years older, but so are his lungs. He is stil smoking, etc. I think he will move around less so that he doesn't get too winded to sing.

He has been throwing up a few kicks and moving from stage left to right. Twirling the mic stand, etc. I think he will do more of this kind of thing during the shows.

More important to me is how he sounds...I am more than pleased with what I hear.

His overall appearance (hair, clothes) also shows some maturity. Thank God, because the iradecent day-glo jumpsuits and platinum wig he sported a few years ago looked totally ridiculous.

I just wish he would realize that there are high ranges he can't hit anymore and try to sing some of those falsetto or just approach it differntly.

There's this one thing he does when he tries to go up in the register that just grates me to no end.

He is trying to sing more and I'll give him an A for that.
But he needs to really listen to the rehearsal tapes and fgure out ways to approach some of the material differently. He's much better off just doing his whiskey soaked bluesy voice

Have any of you heard Geddy Lee singing "Free Will" or any of the 20+ year old Rush songs recently? He can't hit the high notes either. Not that his current performances are bad - they're just different. He adapts the song to fit his current range.

I for one am glad to see the new and improved Dave. I loved the screaming, the jumping, the long hair, the spandex, the assless chaps - back when he was 29 and could pull it off. Recently, though, it was looking and sounding ridiculous. It looks like he (and Ed, too) are really trying to give this the best shot they can now, instead of trying to recapture their 20s which would look stupid imho.

I think Dave looks great and can't wait to see them live.

Dave does look great. I am so happy he has kept some of the glitz alive there though. Not as blatant as in the past but still THE Toastmaster General of the Immoral Majority...
