Default Dave in new Joe Strummer doc

I just finished watching a new doc on Joe Strummer called The Future Is Unwritten. The director, Julien Temple (director of Jump), used some archival footage of Dave saying more or less The Clash and bands like them need to stop taking everything so seriously (circa 1983).

It's funny cause in the end, after seeing how many years Strummer spent kind of aloof and depressed and lost you almost wonder if maybe Dave's "advice" isn't as dumb as I'm sure Temple used it to portray.

That sounds like a Dave shoot-off-the-mouth-circa-1983 comment for sure. I wonder of he'd say the same now? (Thinking back to the press conference Bono comment...) Yeah, he probably would.

Funny thing is, Dave is absolutely right. Hey, seriousness has it's place, but the problem I have with most new musci today is that it's too serious and depressing. Thank God for VH.

I remember Dave's US Festival comments about the Clash and feeling a little torn because it was seemingly like Dave/VH/the party rock contingent vs. Strummer/The Clash/serious-minded punk rockers and I was a fan of both. In hindsight, its obvious that things aren't as black/white as that. Yeah, DLR will still try to cultivate the carefree Rock God (though hopefully in a more dignified manner to reflect his age during the upcoming tour) but his foreray into the paramedic world would indicate that Dave has at least a small altruistic bone in his body.

To the point HYS made, maybe Strummer did take things too seriously since he died of a heart attack way too young (IMO). Of course, smoking a pack a day didn't help.

I agree looper... by the way if you really like the Clash you should try checking the film out, it's really good.

That's me. When I put on those headphones, I want escape. I don't want to hear about politics and starving kids and deforestation and crap. I care about the issues and give to the poor, I just don't want it in my tunes.

I used to listen to Bono back in the early days talk about how U2 was rock and I'd be "that ain't rock, it's political music and it's depressing and it sure doesn't make you want to . . . . I'd say U2 has been rocking for quite a while now since about 98. Less political but good. I don't own their stuff or anything, I just find them slightly more digestible.

Very true. It's tough to listen to "Fair Warning" and parts of his radio show and think Dave is that far away from some of The Clash's themes...

Remember the classic rock track Dave recorded with Travis Tritt on YFLM called "Heartbreak Cafe"? That is the essence of rock...the only thing that can top that is some tight silver pants and a tophat on your cock.

I also believe DLR's politics may not fall too far from Strummer's or the Clash. DLR's point seemed to be- "Lighten the fuck up". Not a bad mantra. I think as much as he may have agreed he wanted rock to be more about fun and rebellion for fun's sake then- Let's protest, not shower and destroy something! Sorry hippie and punk slam there.

I never took Dave's comments about The Clash seriously, just as I don't take his comments about Bono & U2 seriously now. It's just Dave's way of saying "i'm not into the message music. Fine for the other guys, but I'm here to party. I AM the party"

And there's plenty of room for both.

It's just too bad Joe didn't live long enough to get a Clash reunion tour going, because things were likely headed in that direction right around the time he died
