Default China's Army Hacks Pentagon Computers

I've been following this story. Along the way I've been suprised at how many people believe that China's military power lies only in it's number of troops.
To the contrary, they're very technologically advanced and very well equipped.

China also shot down one of its own spy satellites recently just to show that they could. Targeting and shooting down US defense satellites would blind US military systems.

Here's the story about China hacking Pentagon (and other countries) computers.
Some of you may remember hearing US leadership saying fairly recently that attacks on US defense computer systems would be considered an outright act of war.

    China's Army Hacked Pentagon Network

China's Army hacked into a computer network at the Pentagon in an attack that has US officials concerned about the growing regularity and sophistication of China's technological assaults, the Financial Times reported Tuesday.

Computer specialists with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) penetrated an unclassified network used by policy aides to US Defence Secretary Robert Gates in June, resulting in a weeklong shutdown of the system, the newspaper said in a report that quoted unnamed US officials.

The PLA has demonstrated the ability to conduct attacks that disable our system ... and the ability in a conflict situation to re-enter and disrupt on a very large scale," a former official was quoted as saying by the Financial Times, adding that China's Army has also hacked into the networks of US defence companies and think tanks.

The penetration of the Pentagon network three months ago came after the US Defence Department had staved off the hacker attacks for several months and as China's military has been testing the Pentagon networks hundreds of times a day for the past few years, the British newspaper said in a report from Washington.

An unnamed senior US official told the Times that "no doubt" existed that China was monitoring e-mails sent on unclassified US government networks.

The report was not the first accusing China's Army of breaking into the computer networks of foreign governments. Germany's Der Spiegel news magazine reported two days before German Chancellor Angela Merkel met Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao in Beijing last week that Chinese hackers had infiltrated German government computers with spy programs.

The article said intelligence services suspected hackers in the Chinese army were behind the online attacks on computers in Merkel's offices, the Foreign Ministry, the Economics Ministry, and the Research and Development Ministry. The first spy programs were found several months ago, it added, citing an investigation by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Germany's domestic intelligence agency, and the Federal Office for Information Security.

Although Wen and Merkel did not address the charges in Der Spiegel's report when they spoke to reporters August 27, Wen vowed that his government would take measures to eliminate hacker attacks.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman also said during Merkel's visit that Beijing opposes and has outlawed computer hacking and is cooperating with other countries to combat computer crimes.

Mmm the guys who sent a dude in the space wouldn't be technologically advanced? The 'how many people' must be living in the 70-ies to think that.

This makes me wonder what we can do to their systems. I would think that we are also prepared to tap into their systems as well as disable them so that in the event of war, we would be on a level playing field. It reminds me of the Raptors in Jurassic Park who kept testing the fence when they said hackers had been testing the system "hundreds of times a day".

It's kind of funny that you folks don't think we have done this to them, ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO!!!!!. These fuckers have nothing on us except population. When we go to war with them it will be over in 15 minutes because we will both send nukes and kill the planet, end of story. I will be in Irivine,California when this all goes down because there are more chinks per sqaure inch there than there are in Bejing and I am sure they won't lite up there own.

Chinks??? Are you serious? You could express your thoughts without using a derogatory term.

Noun 1. chink - (ethnic slur) offensive term for a person of Chinese descent.

Don't bother with him, I can just hope he's not being serious with his post.

osolomeo is being an idiot. In one breath saying "They've got nothing on us accept population" (similar to so many others that believe china's power lies only in the size of it's army). Then in the next breath he says ". When we go to war with them it will be over in 15 minutes because we will both send nukes and kill the planet".
So reducing american cities to rubble equates to them having "nothing on us". Yeeeah okay.

I would hope so too. I'm sure we do, though I wonder how effective.
Sure we do it to them as well and it's been going on for some time. The chinese though seem to be showing off their capabilities, aimed specifically at getting a rise out of the US. Like shooting down their own weather satellite recently for example.
    Story: http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/space/0...ile/index.html

Bush doctrine states that we will "deny, if necessary, adversaries the use of space capabilities hostile to U.S. national interests."

Basicly reserving the right to pre-emptive strike against China.

To note, the U.S. has been able to shoot down satellites since at least the mid-80's.

Funny how I hear a lot of people on the net saying how Chinese/U.S. relations have warmed so much in the last couple of years and that there's no real danger.

John Arquilla works in my neck of the woods, I've gone to presentations he's done. Here's an interview he did on the subject for PBS back in 2003:

He's been banging the drums on this issue since 1998. Nobody at the Pentagon is listening.

I loved that movie! It was great at the time thinking some kids could actually breech the security of our defense system only because you didn't really believe it could ever happen. Now, you're scared to death some 15 yr old, pimply faced computer nerd is going to infiltrate the banking system and drain all your money, never to be seen or heard from again.

Yeah, I was initially inspired by that movie. Also from the Superman movie where Richard Pryor hacked into the bank computer and managed to download all the half-cents so nobody noticed for a while. Unfortunately, my 2400 baud modem and my cheesy, usually not working "Quantum Link" online service (which eventually became the still cheesy but at least half-functional AOL) proved not to be up to the task.

And the Apple II machines I used at school weren't even networked at that point, let alone connected to any form of internet. But I had some nuclear war simulation based on the WarGames movie running on the Apple.
