    Default Pete Townshend Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Project

    I am getting ready to "attempt" to build a replica of Pete's # 5 guitar for my brother (X-Mas present - I'm making a shadow box\display case and am going to put other Who\Pete stuff in it). This is a pretty complicated guitar, wiring wise.

    I've looked and looked. I can find a diagram for your run of the mill Les Paul, but I can't find one for this one. Any ideas? I haven't tried to go straight to a Gibson dealer, fearing they'd tell me to 'beat it' because they might think I'm trying to build this as a rip-off for the money (I've heard this from others before).

    This is the one with 2 mini-humbuckers and one DiMarzio Dual Sound pickup (having trouble finding a Dual Sound, as well - I'm actually considering putting a DiMarz FRED instead depending on if I can't find the real deal). It also has 2 extra toggles behind the stop tail (one is suppose to activate the DiMarzio, the other is to change it's phase). I've honestly thought about just putting "dumby" toggles behind the stop tail and seeing if I could just find some form of "5-way" switch and place in the normal position for a Les Paul (trying to find out if anything like that is available - I want the switch to "look Les Paul"), then almost wiring the pickups similar to a Strat. But I would like to get it as close as possible to the real deal.

    Gibson actually made some of these (multiple Townshend numbers - I've seen 1, 3, 5, 6, & 9). Not sure of the number, but they are pretty rare.

    Thanks for any and all input in advance.

    Here's one of the "9's" you'd mentioned, perhaps this can somehow get you going in the right direction. The link is below.

    Number 9: Gibson’s Pete Townshend Signature Les Paul Deluxe Cary Aug 16th

    The Pete Townshend 9 Electric GuitarDay 11 – Thirty Days, Thirty Signature GuitarsCloseup of the Pete Townshend Lp

    I’m gonna’ lay this on the line right from the get-go – Gibson’s Pete Townshend Deluxe Les Paul #9 looks like one seriously sweet guitar. On top of an incredible set of features, and of course its singular style, this one’s pretty much bound to be a collector’s item if for no other reason than the fact that Gibson’s Custom Shop is only producing 75 of them.

    Talk about a limited edition.

    Word has it that the Pete Townshend Les Paul #9 is an accurate reproduction of the LP Deluxe that Townshend played on stage during The Who’s popular heyday of the 1970s, and like the original it sports a highly customized pickup/control set-up, not to mention a ton of other fun tweaks.

    Pickups are a DiMarzio Dual Sound naked humbucker in the middle position, sandwiched by a pair of mini-humbuckers at the bridge & neck. Extra toggles have been added for control of the DiMarzio, including one that taps the pickup and one to throw it out of phase.

    Other unique features include a 3-piece pancake body (maple, mahogany, poplar,) Pete Townshend slim-profile neck, a Nashville TOM bridge, top-hat knobs, custom end-pins & metal jackplate, and of course that oh-so-cool “9” graphic that gives this guitar its name.

    The Gibson Pete Townshend LP Deluxe #9 Features–

    * Pancake Body
    * Three-Piece Maple Top With Cream Binding
    * Mahogany/Poplar Back
    * Three-Piece Maple Neck (Slim Profile)
    * 24-3/4-inch Scale Length
    * Rosewood Fingerboard With 22 Frets
    * Pearloid Trapezoid Inlays
    * Mini-Humbucker Pickups At Neck & Bridge
    * DiMarzio Dual Sound Naked Humbucker (Middle)
    * Three Volume Controls & One Master Tone Control
    * 3-Way Pickup Switching
    * Toggles For DiMarzio Tap & Reverse-Phase
    * Nashville TOM Bridge
    * Stopbar Tailpiece
    * Kidney Bean Tuning Machines

    Comes with a Custom Shop hard case, Pete Townshend Certificate of Authenticity, and a care kit. Available in Heritage Cherry Sunburst only.

    I just finally posted pix on my myspace page of this project. It is done. I used an elitist epiphone goldtop body with a broken headstock that was routed for P-90s. Did a ton of routing. Came out okay. Not pefect, but perfection wasn't what I was going for. I wanted to make the guitar look "gigged" or "used".

    I used a neck pickup from a deluxe of the period. Got a NOS DiMarzio Dual Sound. I had to buy the new Gibson mini humbucker pickup (I didn't feel like spending $300 on 1 pickup - it still sounds good.

    The guitar plays really nice. BUT, it is wired like a standard Les Paul because I couldn't find a wiring diagram to get the DiMarzio wired for phase in\phase out function. I told my bro (this was a present for him) that if I ever get that diagram, I'm going to have to take it back for a few days. One thing on the wiring (too much wolfgang influence), I realized after I wired it, that I wired the pickup switch like a wolfgang, not a Les Paul.

    Other than that, that's about it. It was a Christmas present that I thought came out pretty well. I literally finished it at 12:30 Christmas morning.

    Later.

    Also, got a pretty much all the other stuff in the case on ebay. Got some "game used" picks that I set up so you can pivot them to see all sides. I tried to post images here but it I couldn't get it to work (too impatient, I guess).

    Thanks tommy. I got the "5" a little high (not quite close enough to the toggles behind the bridge). I should have cleaned the display case glass better before the pix (looks kind of cloudy). Didn't put the truss rod cover on because Pete's didn't have it. I didn't want a "perfect" guitar.

    Can always use more brothers. My brother has introduced me to everything I'm in to, so it's the least I could do. I did tell him Gibson reproduced some replicas of the 1, 3 & 9 guitars, but I wasn't paying $5,000 for one. He's a C-4 Corvette fan, too. I told him this will be about the best I can do for him for a while. But one of these days, I'll be involved in that acquisition some how, too.
