Default Outside of a Eventide Harmonizer, whats the best way to get Ed's Detune effect?

Sorry for the long title, but I was just wondering about it. Would a normal chorus do it? I've heard good things about the Boss PS-5 on detune setting, any other ideas...thanks guys, I appreciate any help you can give me...

Anything that does a decent micro pitchshift will get you very close (yamaha spx90, Lexicon MPX1, TC Gforce, etc). As for choruses, some will do it much better than others. the vintage MXR Stereo Chorus, Boss DC2, and the old Rockman Stereo Chorus module get very close.

Behringer makes a cheap DC-2 knockoff. I'd like to try one, if I could find it at a local dealer.

The Rocktron Tsunami does a good job in "Ambience" mode. If you can find one that's not broken, it'll sound like "Black and Blue". Mine has got something jacked up with the delay circuit, so I don't know what I'm going to do. It's basically delaying too much right now, so the 2nd pick attack is landing at a point that makes it sound like 2 angry bees having a dance-off.

It's illegal to get that sound. Edward Van Halen has a patent on it. Sorry!

Even if it sounds close, it's illegal.

I bought the TC Electronic G-Major unit several months back via recommendations from folks here (in a similar thread). The detune effect is cool, and all of the effects on it are generally good, but I've opted to use it in the studio only and not with my live rig. So I can't really offer much verification of its function beyond that.

The G-Major is a great piece of kit for the money, loads of functions and set ups. Love the spill over on reverb/echo great for finishing off solos, still can't believe the price from a high end company like TC.

Andrew, you should try it live with a series/parallel effects loop at about half feed, colours the sound well without loosing the pure signal. But I'm not sure what signal path the 5150 has though.

thanks for the help guys...Im not sure what Im going to do, but I have a lot more options that I started out with...on a similar topic, do you guys find it worth it to go with rackmount setup as opposed to a simple pedal board?

I am probably one of the few that still uses rack mount... just simpler to me. its all midi controlled, so I can get to about any sound with one push of a foot pedal. My midi board even mimics a/b switches.

I have a DHP-55 digitech harminizer, if you can find a used one, give it
a try. a great poor mans unit (about 1/3 price of an eventide)
has a great chorus sound and decent harminizer.

I've found patience is required for rack gear. I have little of it, so I like hitting a pedal and knowing what I'm gonna get. Of course it took a lot of patience and time to put together the pedal board in a good order and with quality cables, so it could be that I'm just being a big baby about learning the rack stuff. Either scenario presents positives and negatives.
