    Default Lunar Eclipse Tonight

There will be a lunar eclipse tomorrow morning that will be best viewed from the West Coast of the USA, though the East Coast will be able to view it, too. East Coast, look for it around 4:45 AM. West Coast, you will see the best part of the show around 4:15ish AM.

I'll check it out, if it's not too cloudy. I'm way into astronomy. I teach it and also volunteer at a planetarium. I love working the dome A few weeks ago I had a blast catching the Perseids meteor showers with my friends... one of the best meteor showers I've seen.

    Anyone else into Astronomy?

For more on this lunar eclipse, check this http://www.astronomy.com/asy/default.aspx?c=a&id=5912

Now for a fun-ducational quiz... Why does the moon appear orange during a lunar eclipse?

I assume 4:15 is Eastern Time, not Pacific correct?

Are the skies relatively clear for you guys on the west coast? This side (Florida, anyway) has had some serious cloud issues around 3-6AM our time...take that onto consideration. Nothing worse than getting out of bed only to not be able to see anything.

I thought you folk still were contending with haze from some fires out there?

I'm gonna get up too. Red moon rising is something to see for sure. Portends of great or terrible things.

Sunny right now, but we have had a lot of humidity and clouds the last few days. Today has been nice however, so hoping!

Depends where you live. Recent ocean winds here in my neck of the woods have finally blown away all that ash and smoke this week from CA's second biggest fire on record. City folk with city lights have a harder time seeing sky stuff, obviously, but there are better urban spots than others, of course.

I suspect in LA, either Angeles Crest or Mulholland would be prime spots for viewing. I can probably see enough here from my balcony, though a short five min. drive up the mountain would drastically improve the show.

I'll check my math again, but I did mean Pacific time to try and make it easy for everyone.

Mid-eclipse occurs at 5:37 AM CDT.

Hmm... did I do my math wrong? Grr.... time zones...

And I've heard that rumour about Mars will appear as big as the moon. It's BS I assure you. Through high-powered amateur telescopes, the polar ice caps of Mars are barely visible. What this problably was is some guy trying to fool people into looking at the moon tonight, and since it is orange/red in color tonight, much like Mars' rust color, he wants to see who he can trick into thinking that the same moon they've looked at many nights for their whole lives is actually Mars.

The last one I saw was pretty cool. Looked at the moon through a telescope, looked like something from "Hellboy".

Skies are looking promising here (which hasn't been the case most of this month, so it's a good coincidence that it happens to fall on the night of the eclipse)

It will probably look pretty cool, but I'm tempted to take advantage of the extra darkness and try to sleep.

Beautiful warm day today and not a cloud in the sky, although with the Ocean down the street, clouds can show up at any time. I'll still be up anyhow so I'm psyched.
