    Best 5150 for the $$

I've been thinking about adding to my guitar collection (don't tell my wife)

Straight to the point. Who in your (as in ALL of YOU) humble opinion , builds the best
quality 5150 replica for the money..... Thanks in advance - CV

Build Your own man. It's super easy, just buy a kit and paint. There are so many out there. Try www.Frankenstraat.com .Good guy and super quality work. Look at the forum pages for sample builds, gallery and help.

I built one just the other week. Perfect 5150 paint scheme with a fender neck. It can be rewarding. If you want another option I think our very own divebomb get's it right as far as excellent parts and very accurate.PM him.

I have to disagreee here, it's not "super easy" it may not be extremley difficult
but it's not super easy, no offence to anyone but there are people out there who have no mechanical inclination at all , really no kidding they can't or don't even want to tighten a loose jack nut, And sometimes building can be *very difficult* depends on the situation, stuff happens, things don't fit\work and then you have to be a problem solver\machinest\woodworker . Because you got a kit and you found it easy doesn't mean your gonna have the same easy build the next time.
I have built well over 100 guitars and have spent many a late nights banging my head on the wall. So my advice is if you have technical ability and really want too then build your own, if you have the slightest doubt then buy one.
as for a place with a replica the only place I know anymore is meanstreetguitars.com they are *not* high end guitars but they are a good buy for the $$ you'll pay. I bought one of his rock legends to try and again it's decent for the $$

While I will agree on technical apptitude is different for all, if you get a good kit, assemble and play it first, then break down and paint is really rather simple if someone can actually work with there hands. Also if you get a kit from Frankenstraat.com it will be perfect. The guy is an absolute master and perfectionist.Take a chance dude and due it yourself. If you fuck it up, try ,try again. You'll learn a shitload and eventually be good at it.

My very first custom-assembled guitar went together so easily I was disillusioned at how difficult and problem-rearing the process could be. My second custom guitar threw a few more "required tweaks" at me, and the three I've got in the works now have all been stalled out for months.

It's fun to assemble your own guitar, but Rols here makes a good point: Be ready to encounter problems, and have patience.

    Or......
You can always get a cheap Squire strat and just repaint it. There are a few models with the one pickup and pickguard (black and white model ala VH1) and the Kramer 1984 re-issues, come with one pickup, one knob, kramer logo, and even hockeystick headstock. All you need is paint and tape. Good luck.

    Squire Strats etc

It must be my age, but @ 41 I know longer can put up with
gear / guitars that have issues.... Hence, I don't want a cheapie
I would rather have quality over less expensive models.
With that said, the word I guess I'm looking for is VALUE.
Great quality @ best $$ price.
Some of the 5150 kits are $800
While you can have one completed for you @ roughly $1,000
That topped off by the fact that I've never put one together
before and have NO guitar building background. I'll pay the extra!
Some of the members of this site & others have built some beauties
and I'm in awe of your talents and knowledge.

with this being your 1st project and all i would consider buying a complete guitar then re-painting it yourself, but in the process of taking it apart make detailed plans/drawings to help when u put it back together (like where you find shims and washers and other stuff). with that in mind the new kramer 1984 guitars are a great base for a 5150 rep they may not be totaly authentic but they're about as close as u can buy off the shelf.
i built my 1st guitar with bits from ebay and it went together quite easily with only a neck shim really being required but thats not to say the next mongrel wont be a bitch i guess i was just lucky this time around. right now im repainting my own original 84 kramer barretta so if u have any quearies pm me or some of the other guys were all here to help out

Mitch @ KnE and Warren @ Southeast both make good quality stuff.
Unfortunately, neither offers a 5150 style neck.

For the most accurate kit (including neck), I recommend frankenstraat.com ...
