Looking for a good value bass

I'm looking around for a bass to do some recording with. Can anyone recommend a good one for under $400?

When I worked at a music store for a while, I was always impressed by those. I think all of the Peavey basses are worth looking at.

I don't follow...( not being a wise-ass here) if it's merely for recording, why must you need purchase an instrument? Surely you must have folk that you can either borrow or rent one from, minus the need to buy one?

Or, are you setting up your own home recording studio, and thus need the instrument?

One honestly needs to apply some specificity as to requirements for things, both before asking for assistance, yet more importantly defining the very need for that assistance, so others may offer help.

Look, if you have 400 dollars, I can sell you a bass. So can anyone, and their "help" may be somewhat less than altruistic. Define your needs, and please...rethink the question. I speak as a fellow that has gone through this sort of thing.

    All the best in this.

LOL, look chef, I'm just looking for a bass to fool around with and do some recording, and I don't want to pay a fortune for it. This isn't rocket science.

    Forgive my concern.

I don't know much about basses; I own two, but I only play them occasionally in the studio. However, I've found that a lot of the affordable Yamaha stuff that's carried in the music store I teach at is very decent.

Fender P or Jazz Bass are the best.

Ibanez or Yamaha are decent basses to fart around with.

Just ask 20th Century Mozart, he doesn't play any instruments, but he can tell ya ALL about it!

I am very happy with my Ibanez Bass, it has a thin sound but was cheap and very playable, of course I run it though a nice amp to give it tone. Bass $250, Amp $600.
Please get out of my VH t-shirt before you jinx the band and they break up.
