It's a good read. There are quite a few tidbits in there that even the most informed fan probably wouldn't know.

Picked it up today and breezed through it. It's a pretty fast read.

IMO, it's a decent book and gives a pretty straightforward, chronological history of the band culled from fairly common sources. Obviously, the author didn't actually interview anyone even remotely connected with the band so it's written entirely from an outsider's viewpoint.

The author has a healthy disrespect for whatever talents Sammy Hagar may have which is alright by me but there's some considerable critisism of Roth and the brothers when appropriate as well. Despite the author's clear disdain for Sammy, otherwise he gives a fairly objective history of the band up to the disasterous HoF induction.

The color and b/w photos are decent if a bit dark as if some are scanned from other sources. I can't say there's any deep revelations here that would shock or surprise any hardcore Van Halen fan though and it's a bit pricey at $25+. Still, considering there's actually very few even moderately complete histories of the band in print, it's worth checking out.

For the most part, I agree. Just finished it, and it's a good chronilogical history. But, nothing new for those of us hanging around here. It's all stuff (almost all) I've heard before.

I was hoping for some new information, from some source, but he just pulled sources from the public record.

He clearly has a strong liking for Roth-era VH as opposed to Hagar-era VH, which is fine.

Overall, it's great if somebody wants to learn about the history of the band.

For somebody on this site, I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't already bought it. Nothing to see here.

I finished it too. I'll have to concur with the other reviewers. It's juat a straightforward history of the band assembled through interviews and stories you've probably already heard. There really haven't been any revelations at all. It's a nice read though.

I didn't read the Crue book. If I picked it up today though, I might find it more interesting if only because I don't know nearly as much about the Crue as I do VH.

Someone who doesn't know a ton about VH might enjoy EWS more than I did.

Although I'm not a huge fan of Motley Crue, their book "The Dirt" is hands down far better simply because the author extensively interviewed everyone separately and used those interviews to put together a balanced story of the band that was an extremely entertaining read.

The difference between Van Halen and Mötley Crüe is this.

Mötley Crüe's book, The Dirt, is the best thing they ever did and I don't mind some of their stuff.

Van Halen's music speaks for itself, no book will ever eclipse it.
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

I did find out some things I didn't know, like:

    1. Ed got a girl pregnant in high school and they had an abortion.

    2. Ed's nickname in high school was "RockSteady" Eddie.

    3. The sheer madness involved in their backyard party playing days. They mentioned something about police helicopters and some film that might exist.

    4. Val had a miscarriage in '86 or so.

    5. Ed's dad died of complications from alchoholism. I thought it was cancer.

Almost done with it and I bought it yesterday. Some of the guitar related talk in the book is a bit off the mark...
