    Default Tuning Down Songs?

Alright, now you look at the two major returning acts of 2007, Genesis and the Police, who have aged considerably since the last time they toured together. Van Halen has joined that group, and we all know Dave cannot sing the way he could in 1984.

With that said, do you think that, if they were to play some songs where Dave would have to sing higher, they might tune them down a key musically? It seems logical and wouldn't really hurt any song they did this too.

Does anyone see this happening, and would anyone really mind if it did?

i'm sure all songs will stay in e flat

not that the songs will be in the key of e flat. the songs will stay a half step down. ed's guitar will stay at e flat imo. i don't see them going a whole step down

the police undoubtedly did it, and in fact, i'd say more than half of the songs were in different keys/vocal ranges. vh will probably do the same, though dave did sound very good last summer

vh recorded them all a half step down, so I would think at minimum, they will go there.

dave has sounded great the past two summers that I've seen him, I really dont know where everyone is getting the whole Dave cant sing like he used to. For me that comment mostly comes from the poster's ingnorance/glorifying of the Classic era, cause they've never listened to the old bootlegs in which 85 percent Dave sounds absolutely horrible, he sounds way better now than when he did back then...
the old stuff was written a half step down and I really suspect that it will stay that way...
    Van Halen....nothing else is needed....

Yeah, they'll tune down a half-step. I think that even tuned down for the '04 tour with Sammy as well.

If you listen to some bootlegs or hear Ed talk about it, sometimes they were tuned down to D.

They were a half step down for Balance as well (and Sammy sang better on both those tours).

Most of the CVH stuff was half-step down. That's probably how we'll hear it.

Nobody will notice it live, more than likely. A singer might be able to nail some higher notes in the studio throughout a song than he/she would be able to do live, night in and night out.
So I don't have a problem with it.

I remember that for Jump with Sammy singing, the keyboards were definitely played in a higher key than the album, I'm sure that was to make it easier for Sammy to sing in a more normal voice for him.
During the 2004 tour, I saw them twice, and one time I was sure they went back to the original tuning for Jump.
Sammy also tried singing Unchained down lower, closer to where Dave sang it, and it really didn't sound as good as when he sang it higher. Plus, Mikey singing off-key on the backing vocals didn't help, either.

So anyway, I have no problem with them tuning up or down, whatever makes it easier for the singer to nail the song live.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

That Toronto show wasn't one of Sam's better performances on that tour. He had been singing a lot and some of that Balance stuff wasn't that easy on the vocal chords. "Dont Tell Me" destroyed him nightly.

The Pensacola show early on was pretty good if you've caught that bootleg.

He was great at the Minneapolis show in '95.

Sam also spent the first half of the Balance tour sick. I recall him saying the break from the first leg to the second made a world of difference. The first leg is also where they developed some of the "tricks" to help get him through each night, i.e. Mike and Ed each taking part of the second verse of WCTBL and Mike taking the pre-chorus vocals on "Runaround."

Anyone ever notice that Sam sings better at his solo shows? He always said it was crazy trying to compete with the volume of Ed and Al trying to out-play one another.
