Default Opinions on Epiphone Valve jr?

Im thinking seriously about picking one of these up (the head, not the combo), just to have a cheap tube amp to play with.
Looking around online, there seems to be a TON of mods for this, too.
Anyone have one, or tried one? What did you think? And what OD do you think would work best for the boost? Im thinking Bad Monkey right now.

Do it, it is sooo awsome. I play strats, and the little amp rocks. I have it plugged into a vintage marshall cab. No settings, just your guitars natural sound comming through. Plug in a couple pedals and your set. My main amp was a mesa tripple rec. head, but for gigs, jamming at home, ect. you cant beat it. Plus there are mods on ebay, and you can transform it into the vintage vh sound for another $100 bucks. You gotta change the tubes to JJ's
and you gotta have a good speaker. It is louder than you think, watch youll see
try an mxr pedal. I use the JIMI hendrix DOD wah pedal for all my tones with this amp.

I tried one out at the local shop and was impressed given the price. I've been looking for a cheap option for running a stereo rig, using something in conjunction with my Mesa/Boogie MK2. I didn't investigate the mod possiblities until you posted.

I didn't try it but I'd bet my Rat pedal would be a nice distortion option.

I honestly wasn't all that impressed with the Epi amp line, but I will say, while we were dealers, that we were EXTREMELY successful with the line. Obviously, my opinion is in the minority, so it seems as if a lot of people liked them.

And we haven't had any warranty problems with them whatsoever so far.

LOVE the brown, smokey growl of that amp, but it's gotta be cranked.

I was too self-conscious/polite to do that at Guitar Center, but I had it up to maybe "3", and it was already breaking-up. Taking it to 8 or 9 and letting it flatten/brown out would've been awesome.

I'd like to take one home for a weekend. Such a natural, organic tone.

OK, Im getting one! For $100, how wrong can you go?
Actually, I have this thought of getting one, and then getting one of those 15 watt Marshall mini-stacks (not the belt clip one, but the one with 2 cabs, etc), then retro-fitting the Epi hardware into the Marshall head...kinda my own little tube Marshall stack.

.....which is my 2nd favorite tone behind VHII.

I know those aren't similar to most people's picks, but that's me, I guess!

WACF is a great, warm, mushy-yet-tight sound. Well, it's tight when Eddie's right hand is doing the picking.

They are OK stock, but a few mods really make them happen big time.
