    Default Van Halen Moments

Thought I would start a topic that wouldn't be up for debate or shit slinging. Simply, what is one of those little moments you will never forget concering Van Halen? For me I was at the local pool when I was 18 or 19 this was in the summer of 80 or 81 and Everybody wants some came on the radio and before you knew there were about 20 people sitting around the pool singing "I like the way the lines run up the back of her stockings" along with the radio. It was one of those little moments I will never forget.

Back when the '96 get together happened with DLR,I knew about it from seeing it on MTV,and everyone and their brother knew I was heavy into VH. I drove through town with the girl I was seeing at the time, and at the gas station on the corner was my cousin and about 5 friends of ours. Of course,I flipped them off just for fun and then I hear about 3 of them yell,at the top of their lungs at me "Dave's Back!". The girls I was with was like "wtf does that mean?" I laughed and explained what happened with DLR/Sammy back in the 80's(she knew VH but not good enough to really know about any of that).

They all knew I liked Sammy so much, they just had to rub it in.

I saw VH perform on 12/13/91--the night after my 21st birthday. It was a Friday night, we celebrated my birthday all day long in the dorms and then down to the show--my first legally drunk concert. I was working part time in a music store that was a Ticketmaster outlet and I snagged 2nd row seats for all of us. Partied some more when we got back to school.

All in all, a pretty damn good night.

Mine is at the 1984 show. Ed was doing his solo and a girl ran up on stage and grabbed him. I was in awe just watching him and listening, but after that girl did that, I wanted nothing more than to be her at that moment.

best one for me was during the Carnal Knowledge tour. They played Skydome and I had my jacked painted (Ed on the back - 5150 on one sleeve FUCK on the other) and I'm in the front row. Before Sammy's solo spot I get his attention and show him the jacket and he's like "cool jacket" and takes it and played Eagles with it on. Then heads backstage. For the rest of the show I'm trying to get his attention to say I need the jacket back (its cold in toronto in November). Later in the set he heads backstage again and throws it back on. Then after BOBW he sits on the stage and has something resembling a conversation with me but all dumb ass could get out was "you're the best Sam, you're the best". It was my high school story of the month. I've been searching for a boot of that show but can never find it. I'd love to have that.

    Default 2 VH moments

    1. 1978: I'm 12 years old and just purchased VH1 at the recommendation of a friend. At this point, my world begins and ends with KISS and I'm skeptical that anything will rival them. I put the record on, hear the car horn intro, Mikes thumping bass, then VROOM into RWTD. I recall whispering to myself "What the fuck was that?!" I felt chills. By the time I got to ATBL, I was convinced that that record was the heaviest thing I would ever hear in my life.
    2. 1984: SF Cow Palace, the house lights go black and spotlights circle throughout the building. Then the intro to "Unchained" leads to the stage lights coming one, revealing the biggest stage I'd ever seen in my life. Another "holy shit" moment. That concert was also on my 18th birthday. Hell of a B-day present.

Hearing Eruption on the radio as a 12 year old aspiring guitar player. I will never forget that day, i got goosebumps twice as a youngster hearing music on the radio. First was Black Dog by Led Zep and second was Eruption. I was on a mission to learn both pieces on the guitar from then on..... The rest is, shall they say, history! Still enjoy playing them today at 41.

Gee is it that time already? Seems like I just had to try and remember something about VH not too long ago.

As always, it's gonna have to be the 1981 FW tour in Oakland that I went to with my brother. Hearing Foreigner's "Women" and the lights going down. Hearing the sounds of Edward's wailin Halen, and the lights coming up. The Diamond One and the boys were right in front of me cranking out then-new FW tuneage. The stage is huge. The music loud. I think my only complaint about the show was the bright lights that blinded me during ATBL. Coulda listened to Edward's solo forever tho. The knickers and striped socks? Odd choice in attire til I saw the Diamond One's ensemble for the evening.

    Amazing show. Simply amazing.

I got that once or twice myself. Listening to Atomic Punk and my sister asked what that sound was. Listening to Sunday Afternoon in the Park and again my sister asking what the heck I was listening to.

    People are so clueless sometimes.
