Pentagon Has Lost Track of 190,000 AK-47s Given to Iraqi Security Forces

    Anyone surprised??

The Pentagon has lost track of 190,000 AK-47 rifles and pistols given to Iraqi security forces, the Washington Post reported.

The Government Accountability Office is reportedly conducting a review after a July 31 report revealed that Iraqi insurgents may have gotten their hands on weapons and body armor intended to equip Iraqi troops. One senior Pentagon official told the Post that some of the weapons likely are being used against U.S. forces.

Since when does the US use AK-47s? Are they originally confiscated weapons that we are putting back into circulation?

I assume so... and better yet, maybe they have GPS devices planted in them...

If we gave them to Iraqi security forces, can't we just ask Iraqi security forces what happened after we gave the weapons to them?

Actually, some soldiers carry them to augment the (shitty!) "three-round-burst" M-16A2/M-4 carbine...

This of course can cause problems such as friendly fire, but the three-round-burst limitation can put US troops as a firepower disadvantage in close quarters battle...

And the AKs are a reliable weapon that the Iraqis are familiar with. So I'm guessing we bought them from either China (of course!) or Yugoslavia...

Does it say WHEN the AKs where issued to the ISF?

I ask this only because we only started cleaning house last November, getting rid of (arresting/shooting) corrupt Security officials in Iraq.

Yes, those AK-47 were captured Iraigi stocks, although we've also bought (through the Iraqi government) new Russian tanks, APCs and AK-74s.

The M4A1 is fully automatic. The British SAS can use any assualt riffle in the world as their primary weapon, they chose the M16A2. They finally dropped those in favor of the M4A1. Since 1964, where ever armies have faced off with one side using AKs the other using M16 varrients then side with the M16 usually won with a kill ratio of 10 to1 or 15 to one.

So if you're threatened by ten dudes with AK-47s, your best defense is one guy with an M-16. If that one guy is a US Marine he's probably only going to need ten rounds.

This is really stupid. To think that soldiers are giving their lives on search missions in which 2 or 3 AKs may be found per night.

I own the civilian version of both types of these rifles. The AR is my favorite of the two, primarily because of weight and accuracy. However the AK is equally as deadly at close quarter ranges. Probably up to 300 yards. Also there are numerous versions of the AK being manufactured all over the world. Quality will vary.

Yeah, I think there's also something of one of the largest thefts of US funds in history, that is, buying cheap and shitty equipment and then fraudulently inflating the supposed expenditures. Certain Iraqi defense 'ministry' officials were pocketing the difference.

This shit is only the tip of the iceberg...

I bet a good many of those weapons went to our Shia militia baby-killer "friends."

And the M-4A1 has a tendency to overheat and jams more than other weapons, which is why the Special Forces were thinking of ditching in favor of a FN assault 'carbine,' until that idea was nixed by the Pentagon..

And Navy SEALs use the M-16A3, essentially the M-16A2 with full-auto cyclic instead of 3B, which is what all troops should carry. The Canadians also make essentially what is an exact copy of the M-16A3 for their servicemen...

And the whole point of the M-16 was to deliver more firepower to US troops in the field who were having difficulties in firefights with AKM-toting NVA and VC. Mainly because their M-14s were mostly semiauto. This despite their "one-shot, one kill" dogma that has plagued the military since WWII when more organic infantry firepower made such romantic notions obsolete, and soldiers had to be retrained by combat experienced NCOs and officers about "volume of (suppressive) fire" and the like, because in training, they basically learned to to shoot only at clear targets...

I liked the M-16A2, but if I'm going into a building, I want my fullauto!!!

That has more to do with the side using M16 calling airstrikes against the side using AKs. That, and the sort of the dudes who carry AKs in the first place. I'm sure a kill ratio would drastically differ if it were North Koreans, not Iraqis armed with them.

How do you lose a track on 2 hundred grands of weapons anyway ?

New Russian tanks? I think not. The T-72s were refurbished Hungarian gear, donated by the Hungarians. I've not read about any new Russian APCs (BMP-3s) being purchased, and I rather doubt that has happened or is planned. I'd be surprised by any AK-74 purchase, as they've decided to standardize on the AK-47. Where do you get this stuff?

Since 1964, where ever armies have faced off with one side using AKs the other using M16 varrients then side with the M16 usually won with a kill ratio of 10 to1 or 15 to one.
I'd be quite curious as to how any such "fact" could be arrived at. Got a source?

It's the training, not the weapon.

I actually missed this the first time around. I can't imagine why. But as the two previous posters have stated --this is patently false and just silly...

It's true that the US never lost a major land engagement in Vietnam, but THERE WERE instances where individual platoons and companies of US troops were slaughtered by superior NVA forces. And sort of like the scene "Forrest Gump," or the end of "Platoon," the US commanders would call "Broken Arrow," and combat aircraft and arties would be called in before the Vietnamese could overrun them - technically avoiding a "defeat."

And if you ask most Vietnam combat vets, they'll say the AK was superior in jungle warfare. The 5.56mm M-16 bullet would often deflect off foliage. The 20-magazines were utter shit (I can personally attest to this, they fucking jam like crazy and you could never actually put 20-rounds in them!), and soldiers were initially told they need not clean the "Mattel rifle" because it was so modern and space age, even though they switched the bullets gunpowder to that of the 7.62X51mm round fired by the M-14/M-60 which fouled the weapon in short order, resulting in several battlefield deaths as soldiers were found often with jammed rifles clutched in their "cold, dead hands." Conversely, the AKM will fire even if you shit into the receiver...

The M-16A1 and later are very good, accurate rifles, and Eugene Stoner was a genius. But I really think the Army over thinks this stuff, and the three round burst gimmick is just stupid.
