    Legal advice...

I don't know where to start, so I thought I'd ask all you yahoos...

My band recorded a version of "Ain't Talkin' bout Love" and whether we put it on a CD or not depends on what we have to do from a legal standpoint.

Anyone know how or where to seek out permission to include this song on our CD?

Dunno. But I just kicked ass in court on an eviction lawsuit
and am feeling pretty good about it. Does that help?

It really doesn't matter what anyone says on here anyway.

Ultimately, you will have to consult with a lawyer to start.
One noticeable difference between Judas Priest and Metallica...
...Judas Priest only has one gay guy in the band.

Does anyone else see the irony of this statement?!?! Just bustin' your balls, h*bunter...

I wasn't very clear in my original post: I'm trying to do my own homework first to see if it's worth talking to a lawyer.

You shouldn't have to talk to a lawyer. I've never, as an artist, recorded and released a cover song, but I've produced many that have been. It was always up to the artist and/or their manager and/or their lawyer to do the necessary paperwork and pay the fees--and I know the fee is affected by the number of copies being manufactured. You might want to also check ASCAP to see what they have to say about it: http://www.ascap.com/index.html.

You do need to consult with a lawyer. Like Craig says, you need to know how many copies you plan to sell, etc. You do have to pay fees to use it. If you're using it as a demo to get gigs, you're OK. But if you plan to make ANY money from the recording, you do need to do the proper paperwork and pay the royalties.

I have word out to one of my studio clients about licensing fees. I'll post the info I get from her when I hear back.

    From my client, Courtney: www.harryfox.com

She always handled the paperwork and fees herself. It seemed relatively simple to do, from what I observed.
