Default Compare these pics of Ed's guitars

The floor is open for discussion. Look at these...

    and this...

    ... discuss.
I think it debunks the story of picking up an unfinished body from the floor, but that's just me.

    Um.
Close, but not close enough to the cigar my friend.
Same area for a scuff, but the top pic has rounded edges...more so than the bottom.

I agree. Also, Ed looks older in the top pic. Isn't the assumption that the gtr in the top pic became the one in the bottom pic?

I think the pic in the top is from the ‘80’s.

However, the pictures I’ve seen of Ed backstage at the Whiskey shows Ed playing a black Strat (or Strat style) that I believe is the Frankie before any mods (these pics are in The Inside mag.) I wouldn’t be surprised if Ed was trying to copy Clapton with an off the shelf black Strat, and slowly kept modifying it.

that area is in direct contact with his leg alot, so i wouldnt be suprised if alot of his guitars were like that.

its two different scratches. two differnt guitars .

it is definetely a precursor to the BW frankie idea wise , i doubt the two front pickups are wired up so he had the one pickup one volume idea already.

that first pic with the sunburst strat is from early 1976 during the club days , look at his cable its an old school curlycue job.

If it was the same guitar, you wouldnt see the scratch in the lower picture. It would've been painted over when he did the stripe job, right?

I also noticed the similarity in the scratches in various places. The "rounded edges" bit, though, seems to strongly rebuke the idea that it is the same guitar.

Well if the wood in that scratch had been sweat on and then sprayed over with white it wouldn't have stuck very well even if he sanded the body before spraying it. The roundover on the edges is in my opinion distorted because of the angle of the picture and the flat finish of the paint. i don't know if a leg could cause that kind of wear. I play my guitars hard and I've never worn the paint in that area.
This is exactly what I wanted... debate!

    Different guitar IMO ...
If he didn't take the time to paint the body black THEN white (which would more than cover the flaw IMO) then the stripes would be sunburst, no?

    Hey Dino...
I just assumed that he sprayed some black to make it all one color. Come on... you know paint doesn't stick well to dirty wood. A few times in and out of a case would have knocked it off.
I'm just saying is all... you don't have to yell.

    I'm just hav'n fun Dive.
FWIW, I don't put much weight into what I read in EVH interviews either.
There are so many inconsistancies in his stories and he has as much as admitted to telling "fibs" to throw us off to what he's doing/done in regards to his guitars, amps, etc ...

I still believe they are two different guitars, but I'll admit ...
    that's an interesting find.

Hey lets not forget,, frankie was Ed's SECOND guitar he built... He has said in several interviews it was a Fender that he first routed/chiseled a humbucker in. He said that it got close to the sound he liked but thought that the wood that Fender used wasn't dense enough so he went looking to make a guitar out of denser wood, that's when he went to Boogie Bodies and they probably talked him into the ash body that is frankie.... so the pic may be the prototype.

O.kay I,ll chime in. Having owned several Strat's throughout the years and own 3 EVH Charvel's, they are NOT the same body. Even though there made (now) by the same company. Dive, if there's a store near you that has any EVH Charvel's in stock, go play one next to a strat and you tell me.........

An anecdote I remember to have read someplace was, that Eddie used to throw his guitars into the back of car extremely carelessly. So maybe thats one of the target areas he liked to hit
Thanks for paying my rent. -- EVH
