    Default Ant Farms

Wife & I decided last year that we will home-school our 2 boys beginning this year w/ the 4 YO & the 2 YO to follow. Anyhow, the K-4 curriculum(sp?) comes w/ several cool projects regarding nature & creation. One of them being an ant farm that we set up last week. Most of the mail order ants were DOA due to the sweltering heat they got shipped in but 8 of the 25 have survived. The first thing they did was move the 17 dead ones to one corner & bury them & then commence to tunneling like mad-men. Both of the boys are totally geeked about it & have to check up on the ants several times daily & report on the progress. I know it's goofy but stuff like that has always fascinated me.

    Ant Farms rule!

I sold a ton of them during my time at the toy store. You can always order more Ants later BTW.

We got a snail from my daughter's K class. My wife is hooked on it. Its name is Sparkly.

Congrats on homeschooling. I wish more people could (and would) make that decision. I may choose that down the line.

We're going to try home schooling next year also. I plan on an ant farm myself as well....oh, and probably one for our kid too.

Ants farms are cool unless they are in your 2'' tounge and grove vaulted ceiling.

What does anyone need to send for ants for? Come on in front of my house and stomp on a mound and you'll have all the ants you want in seconds. Of course, they'll be biting holes in your flesh, but hey, beggars can't be choosers.

I had one customer who set up their ant farm in the bedrrom window and not long afterword found that a local ant colony had invaded the house and because they were smaller they slipped between the grates in the air-holes got inside of the ant farm. Then they promptly killed all of the "Invaders" inside of the ant farm.

Nothing like the classics, but recently I ran across the space-age ant farm:

No idea if it's any good or not. Looks cool, though.

I bought that for my son last Christmas, it was cool. You order the ants and stick them on top of that gel stuff and after a couple days they start tunneling. They lived for 3-4 months surprisingly. Apparently they eat that stuff.

Yup, ant farms rule. How about this? http://www.sea-monkeys.com/

About the only flaw with home-schooling is the lack of development of normal social skills for young children, brought about through osmosis via the interaction with kids of their own age. Keeping this in mind, I'd hope the curriculum makes allowances for this. If not, I'd highly recommend some sort of research into this area by yourself and the wife.

All the best to you folk in this endeavor. It certainly is a difficult, yet ultimately rewarding task.
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
