    Default Long boxes

Anyone keep the long boxes CDs used to be packaged in? I was doing some deep cleaning and I found the Vah Halen long boxes I kept many, many years ago. I forgot I even had them. The only ones I don't have are 5150, OU812, and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. I like the Van Halen 1 box with the stripes all over it.

In the early days of CDs they packaged them in boxes about three times the length of the CD case, standing vertical. It was usually four color printing with the album cover and/or other art on it. I used to cut out the fronts and hang them on my wall. I'm almost certain all mine got thrown away years ago. The record companies obviously figured out it was an expensive way to package a product.

I still see those sometimes on a rare occasion. At outlet / warehouse stores, like Sam's Club or Costco.

I had my long boxes cut and hung up on my dorm room in college- vintage 1989. It surrounded my EVH posters- I had 84 Ed with yellow tiger strip pants w/ guitar played horizontally on tray set up and the Eddie circa diver down poster. I also had cut out a caricature of Ed's face from Playboy magazine that freaked me out when I was loaded. It was sweet.

Yeah, and before that we had these rectangular plastic things called "cassettes". We didn't have no fancy downloadin' or iPods. No sir....

Seriously, when CDs were first introduced I think the boxes were used so they could fit CDs into the existing albumn/cassette racks in record stores.

I think they were discontinued by the time Balance and Van Halen 3 were released. So the last one is probably Right Here, Right Now (which I have). I'm sure they are rare, but probably not worth much. They might be if they are still sealed or something.

I am pretty sure I have them all in storage. For some reason I used to keep them.

The long boxes were necessary at the time because all the music stores had bins set up for 12" vinyl records, and for the first few years, there were still more titles sold on vinyl than CD, so the stores didn't want to convert over to shorter bins for the 5" CD cases until they became the standard format.

Back then, I had a lot of those long boxes stapled all over the walls. Why buy posters when this shit came with the CD??

They're all long gone now though.

I had the back of OU812, the Darwin Monkey, hanging in my janitor closet back when I was a janitor. It was hung on the electric box in there. My fondest memory of the Long Box.

    Kinda' silly I know
