    Default The Jimi Hendrix Memorial

This past Sunday I paid a visit to the Jimi Hendrix Memorial at the Greenwood Memorial Park Cemetary in Renton, Washington. (http://www.jimihendrixmemorial.com/) It was a last-day-of-my-trip thing, and I can offer no explanation for feeling the need to go besides a desire to make a personal connection to someone who has otherwise been only music and pictures my whole life.

Anyone have any Jimi thoughts or words to share?

I always thought it woulda been cool back in the day for an amplifier advertising campaign with Jimi, if they used the slogan: "Marshall is my middle name."

(Johnny Allen Hendrix, later re-named James Marshall Hendrix)

Also, I have the same birthdate (11/27) as Jimi & Bruce Lee

Man, what's to say that hasn't already been said? The man was, without exaggeration, a genius on the level of any other great composer in history. Although not really political in nature, his music helped break down racial barriers at a time when the US was tearing itself apart.

He died the same year i was born and I've always wondered what it would've been like to hear his music for the first time without it being filtered through everything that came after it. Then again, that might have been dangerous...

Really, how do you top that? I was just watching the Monterrey Pop special on VH1 and enjoyed Pete Townshend's recollection of being terrified of following Hendrix onstage. Townshend said that after following Hendrix all over London and worshipping at his feet - with Clapton, Beck and a few other guitar gods - there was no way he was going to go onstage after Jimi. Can you imagine a band as ferocious as the who being worried about following anyone???

Townshend went to Jimi, begged him to flip a coin to give the Who a chance to go first and won. The Who played first and, of course, smashed their instuments at the end of their set. But in the spirit of playful competition, Jimi still managed to upstage them, by smashing his guitar and setting it on fire. Classic...

"Killing Floor" does it for me, I included an old video of it in Hatch TV purely because of the rhythm playing. (note that it is available on youtube.)

so true. While Hendrix may be remembered as a pioneer as far as lead work is concerned.......to me he was a pioneer with the guitar as a whole. One of my personal faves has always been the acoustic version of Hear My Train a Comin.
