Default When did they quit being Van Halen ?

    For me its about 85'

I love Sammy as the Red Rocker, but from 5150 to Cherone its Van Hagar or Van Cherone.

Its too bad they wont include Mikey in the recent reunions with Dave. Would'nt it be cool to think of the four them at the 5150 studio jammin' ?

I am having a hard time realizing what might happen with Wolfie ? What is he 17 yrs. old ? This isnt a reunion, its a different band.

Oh well, I guess its not 1978 anymore

For me, during Balance. I know a lot of people rave about that tour but it felt like the end for me.

    Hi,
I know I'm not on the guest list, but I'm a good friend of the road manager's best friend's dermatologist. So, it's cool, right?

I just thought I'd put my two cents in here in defense of VHIII as a very "Van Halen" album. By that, I mean that Edward and Co. were just making a rock and roll record that they liked and they didn't care about anyone else's opinion of it. Whether I liked it or not is beside the point.
They stumbled badly after that when it seemed that Eddie got his feelings hurt from the albums bad reviews and retreated to Xanadu with his guitar collection and his Loon.
The 2004 "Drunk Guy With A Sustainiac" tour was not a Van Halen thing to do at all. It was just a cash-grab and that, to me, is not what VH is about.

It's supposed to be about the music, man!

sorry I crashed the party JMJ. Roth, Hagar, and Anthony. As long as two of those three aren't there, then it has ceased to be Van Halen to me.

Also uninvited but what the hell. I think it all came to a grinding halt when they fired Sam. Then the brothers really showed what petty, infitile assholes they can be, they just brought it out from behind closed doors and now we know what they are "all they can be." I had no problem with Cherone, he did the best he could, in fact, the live show was really good. Unfortunately the haters were sure Gary was a homo and didn't accept him.And we all know what happened to our favorite band after that, "loon city". So for me, I am still waiting to see Van Halen rise from the ashes instead of another stupid cash grab. Unfortunately, while I will give it a chance, the stupid Mikey exclusion still shows that the brothers Grim are more interested in the "school of rock" approach by taking a little kid out. I'm really glad these two dipshits are musically talented because otherwise they would be lucky to be the local high school janitor team.

I never did......not for me anyway.......I was never one to feel the need to label anything just to justify in my mind changes in a rock bands lineup...

Eddie can call his band anything he wants to.....I don't care......we can add our little "tags" like Van Hager....VH4.....whatever, to distiguish eras in the bands history......

But the bottom line is that Eddie (for better or for worse) decides who is in the band and who isn't....that makes it his band......it's his last name.....if he wants to call it Van Halen....then that's how I will refer to it.

I'm sure that attitude labels me to some of you out there......so which is it?

    Sheep?
    Ed Apologist?
    Asshat?

doesn't matter....don't care about that either......

The answer is 1995. Balance was the last true Van Halen album. Sure, there's a small cult that will always claim 1985, but stats don't support that. Sales, popularity, and tour attendance indicate the continuing viability of Van Halen as Van Halen post-85, and the cultural mainstream did in fact accept Sam after Dave QUIT, and he did garner more than enough success to become a part of the legacy, like it or lump it. Numbers don't lie.

Individual preferences don't reflect the greater sum of mass appeal. One might not LIKE that the masses didn't shut down the VH machine after Dave left, but that doesn't mean Van Halen ended for the world. Too bad for those who were that hardcore, I think...they missed some kick-ass performances in the years between 1986 and 1995.

BTW...for the record (this'll be stance clarification #207, for those keeping track), I prefer the Roth era, but respect and dig the hard stuff from the Hagar era, mock the Cherone era at any opportunity, and will likely do the same with the Wolf era, presuming the latter comes to fruition.

The trick is to separate personal desire from cultural acceptance. A few cats online have difficulty with accepting the simple fact that most Van Halen fans may not have mirrored their individual tastes during the Van Hagar years. Sure, maybe everyone else is stupider than those elite few who Know Roth No Halen. Them boys are groundbreakers, after all. Still interesting that many of them are okey dokey with Van Halen 4, methinks. Crazier than a shithouse rat, I say.

So.....if both Dave and Sam were in the band, and Mike was not.....

Sorry, couldn't resist. Resume general swim.
