    Default Edward's playing ability

I have a question for those of you who know much about playing the guitar... I do not play, so that let's you know where I'm coming from...

Though I don't know much, I have a hunch (that may be wrong) that someone in their early-mid 50s can't play quite as fast (or as good?) as someone in their early-mid 20s... To me, that seems like common sense... At least for someone whose style is playing very fast!

I remember when I saw them on the 2004 tour being very disappointed in Ed's playing (to me, I chalked it up to him being around 50 years old and just not being able to shred it like he used to)... If memory serves me correctly, it seems that it was sortof as the tour went on that it was coming out that he was probably lit for just about every show (I was at the Greensboro opener, so I wasnt quite aware that he may have been hammered for that show [or maybe not, i don't know])... So then I got to thinking that maybe his playing wasnt up to par because he was drunk! But then I remember that he used to drink a lot before shows back in the day, when he was much younger...

So my question is, if he's truly sobered up and they do go out on tour with Dave (or anybody), can we expect to hear some 1995-era playing from Ed (I bring up 1995 because with the recent hair cut, he looks so much the same)?? Or is it the fact that at his age, we just can't expect the same as before?? I want to believe the former, that because he'll be sober (hopefully), his playing will be back in top-form...

    What can we expect?

    Thanks

I think he'd be better than 04 if he's sober...

Don't think he'll ever play like he did when he was in his 20's. Time spares no one.....

(He'd still be better than most around though, He's EVH... )

    Ed's playing

Is so much more than "fast"

His rhythm playing, which requires timing and phrasing, greatly exceeds most of the top rhythm guitarists. This is the greatly unappreciated quality to Ed's playing.

His phrasing during his solos is idiosyncratic yet genius.

Technically he suffered in his rhythm and phrasing during his last tour nad both age and the hooch were to blame. Great guitarists like Muddy Waters and B.B. King could blow your mind away with 10 slowly played, perfectly placed notes. Ed could easily do the same.

Fast playing without rhythm, intonation or character is a bore.

I had a friend who just recently died of alcoholisim. The last few years of his life his hands shook really bad. This would be some damage I hope EVH hasn't done.

IMO, Ed's playing has never been about speed, he's much more a melodic/feel player. He has speed if he needs it, but he usually subscribed to the Clapton "say more with less" philosophy.

If he stays sober......you'll get classic Edward, at least as good as 98', when he was on his game.

2004 was all about hootch, IMO; he was just too "sloppy" at times. In listening to all the boots, it seemed to me he was trying new licks but he'd come back in late and such. Plus, how much had he really (truely) played in that time frame? I think if he went on tour right now, having been really playing (dare I say practicing), and he's sober; I don't see why it can't be as good as 95/98; which was the best I had ever seen him; at least from 91 on.

    Sadly, I feel your pain.

Believe it or not, for a while I experimented with using a seat-belt cushion (it wraps around the car seat-belt and is held in place via velcro) around the strap to take some of the weight off of my left shoulder, as Gibson "Explorer" basses are regretably not made out of balsa wood.

I finally wound up re-addressing everything: I raised the guitar up absurdly high by shortening the strap length, and have had ZERO problem since. As a result, I'd highly recommend experimenting with your strap length to allieviate the tendonitus.

I had a teacher who was 50+, closer to 60, so older than Ed, and he could play the shit out of his guitar still. Granted He played at least an hour everyday, Ed doesn't. But it is like riding a bike, you never forget, but the longer you leave it the harder it is to get back in shape, and as you get older, you got to work at it harder and smarter because age is factor, but not as much as you may think.

As you get older your musicality matures and gets better, so there is a bit of a trade off. But remember, IMO anyway, speed only impresses for so long, a tasty musical phrase wins over speed every time.

Eddie was hit and miss on the 2004 Tour. Some nights he was great, and others he was very sloppy. And then there were some nights where he was great during soundcheck, but sloppy during concert. He was like a box of chocolates--You never knew what you were going to get.

Now, if Eddie has truly cleaned himself up, and doesn't want to embarrass himself in front of his son who is now aware of the situation, I'm sure he'll play like a man posessed.

Another thing is that his new replica guitar doesn't have a sustainer in it. A lot of people didn't dig that sustainer. He would make his guitar squeal and feedback for what seemed like minutes at a time.

I think any of Ed's problems have everything to do with dysfunction and
less to do with age. Ed can be as good as he wants to be.

How can you say "time spares no one" when Vai, Satch and others are still cranking out quality product? EVH is his own worst enemy. He's still have it if he got his shit together.
