I thought it was pretty good myself. Muff, I think it re-airs tonight or tomorrow, so you'll be able to catch it. It's a much better series than that football series they tried a couple years back.

    By Roger Catlin
    Tribune Newspapers: The Hartford Courant

With the 2007 Yankees tanking, it may be a tonic for fans to return 30 summers back to a time when the pinstripes were still a powerhouse, even though it would be a stretch to say things were running smoothly.

The eight-episode miniseries "The Bronx Is Burning" (9 p.m. ESPN, continues 8 p.m. Tuesdays starting July 17) based on Jonathan Mahler's best seller, chronicles the intricate interplay, on the way to the World Series, among meddlesome Yankees owner George Steinbrenner; the mercurial but determined manager Billy Martin; and the star whose talents are at odds with his own ego, Reggie Jackson.

And while the ballclub's internal strife is the series' centerpiece, it's also part of a bigger picture of New York City in crisis -- teetering on economic collapse in the midst of a mayoral election, as the city comes to grips with the Son of Sam serial shootings and a major blackout.

At the series' core are strong performances by John Turturro, who donned prosthetic ears to portray Martin, the short-fused manager, and Oliver Platt as the vainglorious Steinbrenner, a walking cartoon of pomposity. Daniel Sunjata of "Rescue Me" is well cast as the charismatic Jackson, brought in to be a star, who quickly alienates the team of Thurman Munson, Mickey Rivers and Bucky Dent when he declares himself "the straw that stirred the drink."

To portray them, the actors declined to meet their subjects (Turturro couldn't: Martin died in a car crash on Christmas Day 1989).

"For me, the wardrobe was important," Platt says in a teleconference. Platt, the Emmy nominee from "Huff" who favors the overstuffed plaid suits of the era in the ESPN series, says, "The two things I focused on were the way he talked and his hair."

The tough part came in portraying a man so often depicted as a cartoon, both in the press and in pop culture's most enduring impersonation -- Larry David providing the disembodied voice from the back of a chair on "Seinfeld."

"He had this way of speaking, the rough bark, that was so distinctive," Platt says of Steinbrenner. And because of the proximity of ESPN, Platt was privy to more audio and videotape than he could ever need. Mostly, he played it constantly until he showed up on the set.

"For me," he says, "it's about really working really hard before you get to the set, so you can forget about it when you get there."

"When they first asked me to do it, I felt I was too tall," Turturro says. "I couldn't shrink. So I got my hair straightened, got the [prosthetic] ears, read the books and watched stuff over and over again. Watching stuff that can stimulate you, that can help free you and make you make an internal connection so somewhere along the line you can connect to the character yourself."

Sunjata says he didn't meet Jackson before he shot "The Bronx Is Burning," either, "but it would have clouded the way I did it." It helped, though, that there were a few members of the '77 team on set as advisers, including Fran Healy and Craig Nettles.

The filmmakers were careful to match the action from the original videotape, which will provide the action any time there's a big scene on the field. "What we're doing is setting up scenes," says Mike Tollin, executive producer. Because authenticity is especially important to fans of ESPN, "we were sticklers every step of the way."

That was filmed here in CT. A friend of mine worked on it. He said that Jon Turturro was a real asshole (although he is a really good actor). Other than that he said it was a great experience.
I didn't see it last night, but I definitely want to check it out.

I'll have to see when it's on again.

as a Red Sox fan, the history is still of interest as Jackson vs. Martin occurred at Fenway. I was 11 at the time. That was one of the golden era's for MLB in my humble opinion... I have hated the Yankees my whole life (still do), but with age comes wisdom. Those Yankee teams were just awesome. Jackson was larger than life ( a great fit for the city that never sleeps) He was showtime before the Lakers !
I am excited to catch this mini series... it looks very cool.

    Go Sox!!!

I wonder if they're going to have someone playing Tommy Lasorda in the World Series, that should be funny.

That season is memorable to me, because I think it was probably the first time I really remember starting to get way into baseball, age 6. The Dodgers being good obviously didn't hurt.

After hearing promos during the HR derby, I decided I'd watch the first bit to see if it was something I wanted to watch when I had time to devote to it (I refuse to watch anything "quality" in a hotel room!) and ended up watching the whole episode. Be interested to see what the "experts" have to say about the factuality of it.
