    Default Cheap(er) Acoustic Suggestions?

As much as I love my Taylor T5, I'm finding that I just don't have as much use for it as I initially thought I would. I also have Baby T, that I haven't taken out of the case for over a year, which is just a watse. I'm thinking of selling both and picking up an Ovation VXT, which should suit my needs (hard rock with the occasional "acoustic" passage/tune) better than the T5.

However, I still need a decent acoustic if just for strumming on the couch. I've played a few Epiphones in the past, was impressed by the quality and playability for the prices and am considering picking up a Jumbo (although I haven't played one yet). Can anyone suggest some alternatives in the $300 -$500 dollar range? I don't need an electric-acoustic, although I wouldn't rule one out. But what I'm really looking for is an acoustic that sounds good and is really playable (i.e., good action/no issues). Thanks!

Have you considered Ibanez? Believe it or not, some of their older acoustic models would be relatively cheap if purchased used, and they currently make some fairly inexpensive models that are quite well put together, and are good for "couch-use".

Years ago I had an Ibanez 12 string that I sincerely wish I'd never sold.

I like this (I'm an all solid wood snob ):

I have played around on a couple in the past, different models though. They are an outstanding bargain, I would match them up with any Larrivee (my favorite).

If they made them for lefties I would be all over an Epiphone Masterbilt. They pop up on Ebay a lot but they have great resale value (except for the expensive high end ones), so you don't get much of a break.

    Anyway, hope this helps.

Oh, almost forgot about this one. It's currently the "Stupid Deal Of The Day" and for an all solid wood Alverez (great fuck'n acoustic guitars!) it's a steal ($249.00 shipped).

Their link isn't working, I would call them to see what's up (if your interested obviously).

The Ibanez Artwood series is fantastic given its pricepoint. Alvarez has some great guitars in the 300-600 range...I'd definately stick with either of these if you only want a straight acoustic...if you want it to have a pickup check out Takamine and the Ibanez AW100 and AW200CE.

Big Baby Taylor -- about $350. Better than any $600 acoustic you'll find.

I have an Ibanez Artwood acoustic that plays and sounds great. Its good looking too, gold grover tuners to boot. I paid $350.00 at GC for it a couple of years ago and it still sounds and looks great. Its tone is much brighter than my Martin so I use the Ibanez alot. Check it out at GC, you'll be impressed.

Huh? It's funny that I didn't consider that, since I love my T5 and Baby T. I'll have to look into that.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'd forgotten about Alvarez, however I really have my heart set on a jumbo. So, after doing some research, i think this may be it:

Now I just have to find somewhere to try one out...

I love that guitar (I REALLY love jumbo's).

This one just popped up on MF.com as well (it's not a jumbo, and it's a little more then you wanted to spend), but it's got a solid top and back:

And one more, all solid wood (I don't know anything about Parkwood):

So I pulled the trigger...Twice! I ended up trading my Baby T for this:

    http://www.parkwoodguitars.com/guitar_pw310m.htm

Great guitar! Feels a lot like the Taylor 214 I used to have, for a lot less money.

If that weren't enough, I traded my Taylor t-5 for this:

    http://www.thevxt.com/about.html

So much better than the T-5, for my purposes - the T-5 is an amazing guitar, though. Two kick ass guitars in two days, what a weekend!

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

I have a suggestion. I went about three years ago to get a good acoustic. Money wasn't an issue. I went to a local shop after visiting the chains like guitar center. I went into a sound isolated room with the acoustics and began to play all the high end stuff.Strangely, it wasn't happening for me so I started looking at middle of the road and nothing. I finally grabbed a $399 Hohner, and this fucker just played and sounded like a dream! Still have it. I would sell my patent pend 1996 wolf before I even thought of getting rid of it. This thing is just the absolute shit!

My point is do what I did, drop all notions of names, prices etc, and just sit and play quitely. It will hit you like a ton of bricks when you get the right one.

    Good Luck!
