    Default Hobby Troubles....Need VH Miniatures

Ok........I'm a bit embarrassed bringing this up, as it sounds way too nerdy, but a few months back I'd decided to do something I've wanted to do since I was a kid....build a huge table-top Train/Town set.

I decided that I wanted a somewhat authentic VH stage setup to be part of it, I just got finished with it. It came out great but it brings me to my problem......
I can't find any miniatures of band people to be Van Halen !
I've looked all over online but no luck !

Does anyone know of a method of "making" miniature people for scratch?
This stage came out way to good to just throw anyone up there !

I know there's some creative people around here....any ideas?

    Please help.

What scale? If it's indeed H.O. scale, you can find all sorts of figures at hobby shops on line. In particular, look for "racing" involved figures to go along with "town" folk. The racing (pit crew) figures accurately resemble the members of a road crew at work during a concert, while the "town" folk can be used as a gathered crowd.

Various grandstands used in H.o. scale racing (with a little modification) can be converted into an outdoor "concert-venue", or you could go the "natural ampitheater" route by forming a "bowl" (like "Red Rocks") out of the "concrete-like" material used to make model railroad style mountains.

The characters onstage can be fashioned from the pit crew as well...you'll need to fabricate the actual instruments themselves, yet at this scale, you could very easily manufacture them from cardboard. Various thin guage wire casings can be used for the drums, and again the cymbals can be cut from paper or cardboard, then painted.

Some patience and some very thin brushes will allow you to hand paint these things yourself (including the characters) using basic Testers model paint, of which you can find a basic set of primary colors (along with black and white) for under ten dollars at most hobby shops.

I was an avid model builder as well as car/train layout enthusiast in my youth. It never goes away.

    All the best in your's!

    lets see the stage!

i used to be into this when i was a kid. we used fisher price people since we couldnt find scale people. we got pretty inventive. christmas lights under a clear inbox holder. for ozzys show we made castles out of pepsi cans and covered them with paper that had brick pattern drawn on. then for effects we used binaca and a bic for flame thrower. always pretty elaborate for our youth. we lined hot wheels up like the audience drive in style.
hell we even had currency, military base and an erupting volcano courtesy of a school project.
my "job" working the crane at the train yard.
my cousin had h.o. scale semis that he would paint up with band logos so they could drive into town. my we had spent hours down there. we had hundreds of hot wheels. we would got to hobby shops to buy our "houses"

    good times, good times.

Nicely done...so I take it that's "N" guage? If that is the case (and from where you have situated it on the board) why bother with stage figures at all?

Truth be told, the "audience" problem could be completely done away with: In front of the stage, craft a small lake, using an old mirror, sand and Elmer's glue. Upon the lake (you may wish to coat the mirror with blue colored sandwich wrap, giving a "wave-like" impression) place various boats and watercraft, including some on the "beach".

The reflection of the lights off the mirror surface would look splendid at night.

No it's HO.....and I've got tons of people for the crowd.....I just can't find band members. I've found a few guitar players, but they've been left handed or holding an acoustic. I figured I'd just have to get it close and repaint them myself, but I'm having trouble finding anything close enough.

As a former manager of a hobby department, let tell you how I'd rig it.

I'd hunt down some FIMO, white, and then sculpt your own and then paint it.

I doubt you'll need more than two squares, but you'll need one for practice.

There's also an air-crying clay called DAS Pronto. You could fashon wire-skeletons with needle-nose pliars and use tooth-picks to form the bodies.

I would try to use old credit cards to make the bass and guitar bodies and use flat toothpicks as the necks.

N-gauge is a bitch to customize, but you already know that.

Can you define anorak, please, Brit.

I hope it's not some British slang for nerd or geek.....I'd hate to have to swim across the pond to kick you in the arse.
