I just had this converstation with my Dad a few days ago.

He's had them all....right now he's riding some big Harely...full dresser.
He's got a BMW Dual Sport thingy...pretty wicked
and he's got a Honda Valkarie...not sure if that's spelled right.

I asked him what bike he liked the best.....the Honda with out a doubt.

This is his second Harley. His first one was brand new...rode from Maryand to Washington State to California and back home.....3 stops at Harley dealers for repairs....most minor, one major with an oil leak. Each dealer was very nice, even coming in on a Sunday to get him back on the road....but he sold the bike after the trip claiming it was a pile of shit after riding Hondas the majority of his life.

But he couldn't resist picking up another Harley...not sure what model, but a full dresser, minus the loud pipes. It's been pretty reliable....no big issues...

But he prefers his Valkeyrie...it's quiet, smooth, powerful and well balanced and hasen't had an issue yet.

His BMW Dual Sport thing is sweet....but the damn seat height would be a deal killer for me....I'd have to hop off at stoplights....no shit.

He also had an old 70's BMW...big twin opposed cyclinders sticking out....I took it for a ride...I found out quickly what disc brakes do for a modern bike...WOW....I cold barely stop this dinosaur of a bike.

While most of you wouldn't be caught dead on a Honda, if it came down to road tripping on a bike, I couldn't imagine choosing a hog over a Honda....but that's not me talking from experience, but my old man.......
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

It's all about the Harley. Love the sound of them idling....

I couldn't judge coz I never owned either of the bikes, but I think US Police don't ride Harley brand for nothing.

Growing up in Milwaukee area...I always leaned toward Harley. But I was also under the "Made In America" kick... Well, I've "heard" that Harley actually has more foreign parts in their bikes than Hondas do now. True or not, don't know... BUT, I can say, Harleys are too damn expensive, and Honda does have a lot of sweet affordable bikes. If you buy a Harley cuz it's made in America, do a little more research. Maybe assembled in America... If you like the sound, then it's definitely Harley, hands down. After all, loud pipes save lives, right?

a guy i know has a BMW, and it's pretty nice. he's on his second one, sold the first a couple years ago.

another guy had a Shadow 750, also a nice bike. not quite the Harley sound but the look was there, mostly black with some chrome. once he had kids he decided to sell the bike and get a Mustang.

back in the early 80's my uncle had a Moto Guzzi police bike in addition to his two Harleys...one of the HD's was a full custom piece, with a crazy paint job, and the words "Fuck Everything" on both sides of the tank. he'd drive me to Catholic school on the other one, a black Sportster (i think it was, no 883 either), and there would be kids coming up to me and telling me i was going to hell because i was on that bike. my uncle is a biker, 6-5 and has sleeve tats on both arms, and it freaked those kids right out.

so now when i tell people he had two HD's, they typically say "why did he have two?" and the answer usually is "'cause one is broken most of the time."

    I own Harleys(79 & 02), Hondas(83 & 98) and a Kawasaki(06).

I won't be able to read the link until I get home, but I will say this:
They are all good at what they are meant for.

The only one that has any quirks(in build quality anyway) is the old Harley. But it is a chopper and the problems are minimal and to be expected.
Periodically(read=every time it is ridden) tightening the bolts helps this.

Of course the old Honda is as reliable as the day it was new.
The newer Honda was abused before I got it, but I am in the process of fixind that and none of it is Hondas fault.

But the newer Harley is the bike I ride the most, and never had one problem w/ it.

The Kawi is too new to tell (and amazingly ridiculos).

I have not seen a cop on a Harley for a long time, it seams to me that most of them ride Kawasaki's or BMW's now.

And thats about what its worth.

I think comparing a Honda to a Harley is stupid, they are very different bikes.
My guess is that the Honda is more reliable than a Harley.

The main difference is you will not find a Harley Davidson junk yard. They are all salvaged, or recycled.

Honda is more reliable but most get scraped one day.
