    Marshall Vintage Modern Amps

Does anyone own a Marshall Vintage Modern series amp or have played through one? These amps sound absolutely awesome IMO. I highly recommend trying one of these bad boys out if you're at the local guitar shop. Classic Marshall sound with slightly increased gain for modern applications. I really think you could dial in a little brownsound if you have the right guitar handy. Here's a link, try the various head models and there's soundclips with them...

That sound clip probably doesn't give you the greatest idea of the amps tonal capabilities, so I highly recommend trying one yourself. I liked it and I'm constantly trying to change/find new tones that sound good to me. I'm very picky.

    What do you guys think?

I didn't know about these amps.
I still rely on my fellow JCM900 hi-gain dual reverb head, and I love it.
Probably I would enjow those too..
Be ready for my new amp "III OSIS" produced by H^3 in stores soon [that was funny in 2006]

Marshall's last decent amp was the JCM800 single-channel 50-watt model, IMHO.

I played one last week and hated it. I loved the idea behind it, but I couldn't find a good tone on it. I've heard some great clips and recordings of it though.

Were you able to crank it? An amp like that loves to soar...

Yeah, we had them pretty loud. We played an EVH, the Vintage Modern, a JSX, and a VH4. The VH4 and the EVH were the best of the four with the JSX being just behind. The Vintage Modern just sounded thin and shrill to me. I know the other amps were more modern sounding, but for the money, I'd still go with the JCM 800 or even the green channel on the DSL for that Marshall sound. Just my opinion of course.

I will second getting a used JCM 800. I see them now & again for reasonable prices and with a little education, you can mod them quite a bit if you need to tweak it.

Ever since I built my 18 watt 6v6 Marshall clone (Push-pull 6v6 with JCM 800 preamp), I haven't been completely satisfied with production amps. It seems like there's a bit of rushed engineering when it comes to even the nice ones (my peavey 5150 strikes me as being not quite perfect). It could be that now that I have some idea of what goes into a tube amp, I'm a bit more critical of some of the things amp makers do to produce the tones we love (or don't love in some cases).

for an education, check out: http://www.18watt.com
    or http://www.ax84.com

    Good luck!

I recommend everyone check out the new Marshall JVM amps. I played one in the store and it is unbelievable IMO. I want one so bad but they are pricey. Hopefully I'll have one in the next few months. Here's a link:

Personally I liked it better than the Vintage Modern, although the VM ain't bad
Any musicians near Boston / Cape Cod want to get together and play some VH? I play drums, guitar, keyboard, bass, and I sing. I want to start a VH tribute band. Contact me if interested.

    Default '79 50 watt JMP

I've been using this amp for years. I like a lot of overdrive, but not at the expense of articulation, because I want to hear the notes that make-up the chord. I've found that with the pre-amp on 5 and the master on 8 - all through a Hotplate - I get the tone I want. Plus, I use a vintage Ibanez tube screamer to kick things up a notch when needed.

I've got a major woodrow for a non-master Marshall head. But my wallet isn't cooperating.

I enjoyed tinkering with the amp @ Guitar Center. I wish I could've taken it home & fiddled some more with it. The setup freaked me out with it's simplicity.

It's almost a simple way to create very, VERY drastically different sounds. I was stupid not to follow their directions, and start with everything up the middle.

A Weber Mass Lite would've been nice, too.
