Default Excuse Me While I clean My Shorts

We just had a 4.3 earthquake blast through here:

And while 4.3 isn't that big, this one was close by and it hit more like an explosion.

    Damn damn damn damn.

Dude, we are sooo overdue for a quake. It has been over a year since we have had one and that is more scary than the earthquake itself. There are a handful of things that terrify me and quakes are definitely in the top 3.

I experienced a decent size quake in San Diego durring MCT, then another back in 2000 while I was in Japan. I have gone through hurricanes, tornados, flash floods, you name it. None of them scared me like those two earth quakes, that shit sucks! Where the fuck are you supposed to go? It takes a certain amount of balls to live in California.

    Or drugs.

I've lived in Southern CA my entire life. The two biggest quakes I can recall experiencing was the '94 Northridge earthquake and the two "Landers" quakes on the same morning in 1992.

The '92 quakes, my wife and I who were still dating at the time were spending the weekend in Laughlin, Nevada. The thing is, we were staying on the top floor of a 20 odd story hotel. About 5am, the building really started swaying and I awoke with a start because water was sloshing out of the bathroom bath tub (my wife forgot to unplug the drain the night before). People were literally running out of their rooms with nothing on and you could hear the building "cracking" as it was swaying. When we got down to the casino, they had some guy handcuffed because when the power went out, he tried grabbing chips off a table. We went back upstairs after a while and maybe a couple hours later, another equally strong quake hit and we again ran down and out of the building. At that point, we started hearing all sorts of wild stories about how roads were destroyed going back to California which proved to be not so bad, but it was still a pretty major deal.

The Northridge quake was probably the worst. Again, before dawn my (future) wife and I woke up to the house just shaking like a motherfucker and we ran out in front and the power had gone out as far as we could see. We knew that was a major quake and we spent the next hour or so in the car listening to the radio when news started coming in about how fucked up the freeways were and the building collapses in Santa Monica.

I also remember watching the beginning of the '89 World Series which was cut off when that big quake hit San Francisco although I obviously didn't feel it here.

I don't really recall the quake itself, but I do remember back in the early 60's when we lived in Newport Beach a few blocks from the "Wedge" on the Balboa penninsula, one big quake cause some huge cracks in the side of the house and we had to evacuate for a day due to a tidal wave warning.

Call me a weirdo but during my time in LA I actually liked earthquakes. It was nature's fury at its best. Now granted I never experienced a large magnitude quake but I liked standing in the doorway to my kitchen and watching the liquids slosh in their containers and the books sway back and forth. I remember the Hector Mine Earthquake from October of '99. I lived in Palmdale, CA at the time and that was just crazy. My mother literally just rushed into my room and picked me up. I was just to scared to go back to sleep. Probably until 4 in the morning that I got some sleep, but man that was crazy. Surprisingly that is the only earthquake I remember even though I lived in Saugus and Palmdale for around 10 years.

Yeah, well we lost 9 homes in 1989 and some poor guy was killed when a structure collapsed on him.

We have little ones here all the time, this one today hit like a freight train. No build-up, just WHAM! It came with a sonic boom as well, I actually went outside to look for a mushroom cloud.

The funny thing is that I was going to be under the house to repair a plumbing leak at the time of the quake. At the last moment I decided to wait until tomorrow since it's my day off. That would have really sucked.

I never meant to belittle the terrible destruction of which earthquake are capable. I'm truly sorry if anyone took my remarks that way. However, the actual implications of earthquakes, the scientific part of an earthquake, is fascinating. As a New Yorker relocated to California it was a wild experience to suddenly encounter this phenomenon. It was wondrous rather than disconcerting.

I couldn't stomach living in California for this reason alone.

Seems to me there are more floods and tornadoes of significant magnitude occuring across middle America on a yearly basis than earthquakes larger than 2.0 out here.

    I'll take the quakes.

Yes, we get lots of tornadoes out here in the midwest, but they're not too bad. They're pretty fun in a way, they look so cool! Plus, they don't do any damage unless they pretty much go right over you, so you're almost always out of danger.

I experienced the New Madrid earthquake out here but I was a hundred miles or so from the epicenrter. The fault line runs from Missouri through Indiana.
I was on a riding mower when the quake happened and the vibration of the quake exactly cancelled out the vibration of the mower so, from my perspective, it got really quiet for a few seconds. Wierd.

Well, ya have me there. Nothing visually exciting about an earthquake.
