Default The Evolution of Eddie Van Halen...what may the future hold?

Hey guys, I've been here since the first cancer scare and there was a big ole thread of us wishing Eddie well, I lurk mostly but something my brother said today struck a chord with me. He's not a Van Halen fan by any means of the imagination but he said he likes where Eddie is going. We've always known that Eddie likes to tinker with his equipment and that the tone and guitars that we've all lusted after are the result of that. Since the introduction of the original EVH guitars and 5150 series we've seen him with various mods on the guitars and who knows how many mods have been made to the amps over the years. Ever since then, the number albums produced have gone done a huge percentage. It is only natural to assume that instead of recording and producing music with the tours, Eddie is now sinking his time into making gear. Perfecting an amp that took 2 years to make, spending time and effort on replicating his Frankenstrat, possibly the long rumored Wolfgang V2 and the official start of EVH inc, all seem to point to the fact that instead of being a full time musician, Eddie is making the transistion to a manufacturer. His starting EVH is a way to continue doing part of what made him famous in the first place, making gear that no one has and sounds better. So what he's making money off of it, thats American capitalism at its best. He posses an ability to make gear that people want and some of us are willing to pay for, so more power to him. Truly, really if the amp, guitar whatever is overpriced then no one would buy it. But the reality of the situation is that people are willing to buy them, and fender picked the right price point to market this stuff at. What's funny about this to me, is that Im not looking at the new amp and hopefully new guitar as equipment that Eddie is going to be playing on a stage anytime soon, its like Fender offering a strat. Eddie making an amp, is like Marshall producing an JCM 800, there will most likely be variations, and different models, and instead of being viewed as whoring out new gear, its just the same thing as Fender rolling out a new amp. Eddie to me is now just a musician who happens to own a musical instrument company and produces stuff that he wants...

A few things, and maybe I'm off base...

I see what your saying. And if Eddie wants to be more of an equipment guy than musician, than I suppose it's his life.

I know musicians always say that they design the guitar that the big company mass produces, but how much of it is them, and how much of it is some professional guitar engineer?

I'm a huge fan of Eddie's music. He's provided the soundtrack to my life, and for that I'm appreciative. But I'm human, and I want more music. Hell, I liked the porn stuff, because it was new.

I'd love new music too, but at the same time, my point in posting above was that I think its time that we adjust our expectations of what we are looking for from Eddie...

Sooner or later...it will take new music to sell new equipment. Or maybe he has enough in the back catalogue to sell new equipment for the rest of his life...who knows.

While I didn't particularly care for the porn music (thought it was very sloppy playing), a friend of mine who is a big classic VH fan, mentioned to me a few weeks ago that he had stumbled across it on the web, checked it out, and really dug it. In his words "It's a side of Eddie I've never heard." This coming from not only a big music fan, but a guitar player himself, and someone who hasn't followed VH in several years. It got me thinking that maybe I was a bit biased in my critique of the two songs. Anyway, I'm hoping Eddie will release some little morsel again real soon. Even on a new porn soundtrack, or right from the VH website (yeah, right...that would make too much sense).

Since we are big VH fans, we tend to be the most critical....unfortunately. The porn tracks weren't as bad as everyone said.

i loved the pron music. Ed just has a style and whatever he tends to play, especially if he writes it, is usually awesome to me.

If Ed wants to sell gear, more power to him...which gives me an idea...

To me it's just another contradiction from Eddie. In so many old interviews he'd talk about how other guitarists would beg to play through his rig. Once they did, they were dissapointed because they didn't sound any diffrent with their stuff than with Ed's stuff. He'd talk about how it's all in the hands and in the touch. I actually agree with that.
Of course nowdays it's all about the latest gear. It's the Frankenstrat. You can't get the "brown sound" unless you have a 30,000 dollar guitar with stripes and ciggarette burns and a 1971 quarter stuck to it and playing through a 5150 III. Or wait, was it a Wolfgang through a 5150 II? No wait, a Wolfgang Special through a 5150? No, no it's a Ernie Ball through a 5150. Oh, I know! It's a Kramer through a Marshall! Or was that a Charvel? Wasn't the 5150 a knockoff of a Soldano?
I'm sorry, what the fuck am I supposed to play again?
