Default What happened to Dave, and when?

On one of my YouTube explorations this morning...

    "Hot For Teacher"

    1984:

    2002:

18 years can sure make a difference. At what point did Dave become a caricature of himself? His "shtick" in the 2002 clip is almost embarrassing.

    Thoughts?

Biggest difference to me is just that in 1984 he could still sing live and that he was still young.

In 2002 he could no longer sing live and he looks like and old man trying to act young. I do think Dave is doing better live now. He sounds better and actually looks his age. I think 2002 was his career low point IMHO. Just sad to see.

The backing band was a little better in 84 as well!
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Almost embarrassing? No, it's completely embarrassing.

With Dave it's real simple, his gigantic ego got the best of him. The guy had no idea how to evolve and reinvent himself because he always had the attitude, "I'm David Lee fucking Roth, no one can touch me."

He used to be so fucking cool with VH but came out of the gates as a solo artist showing signs of gayness with some ridiculous outfits in the Yankee Rose video. Well, it progressed downward from there, finally reaching the low point in the "Shoo Bop" video.

That 2002 clip is brutal. Nevermind about Gary or Sam not sounding like Dave on CVH tunes, Dave doesn't even sound like Dave. The guy completely lost it. Tough to watch.

VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

Um didn't Dave have a hairy chest and belly? Is he waxing it now? It's smooth as a baby's butt.

There doesn't seem to be much difference other than the musicians behind him.

his moves in '02 seem methodical and calculated, like he doesn't want to hurt himself, while young dave was just doing what came to him...

he's fine. he still has it. 2002 was one of his low points of his career. he put more flash into his set just to out do sammy and he looked like an aged goof doing it.

But when I saw him last year, he had composure, engery, was well dressed, and his voiced sounded better.

Dave lost his relevance in 1984. Without Eddie he was no longer nearly as cool. Same goes for Eddie without Dave.

Let's see what it's like when they play together in front of 15K fans again and see if the old Dave comes back. I bet he will to the extent that he can...

that's not true on both ends, although dave burned out after two albums in the mainstream's eye... and you can't just discredit the sammy era - they still sold a "few" records, so i think still remained "relevant"...

Thing is with that band he had then that he didn't have that onstage presence that he did with Sheehan and Vai, and I won't even get into the stage presence he had with Eddie and Mike.

A tour with Dave fronting VH (even without Mike) would by far surpass what you just saw on Youtube. Why? Because Dave won't be the only star on the stage. He will have to share it with somebody who shines more than the Diamond One these days even with his recent stint on milk cartons everywhere in Eddie.
Remember, Eddie was still a star post Roth while Dave's star faded each year.

if Dave leaves the 2002 look in the closet, and goes with his new updated approach to a live performance, a reunited vh could be pulled off for a one off reunion.

They will definately need mikey, just for the backing vocals. We all know Ed can't sing worth shit these days...and Dave can't sing period. If at any point in the vh lifetime, a reunited classic van halen, is going to absolutely need mikey for those backing vocals.

Oh, I would also suggest to Dave, to not do the "wah, and woo's" anymore...he's really beat that to death, almost similiar to what michael jackson did with his "hiheee"

I would also tell dave, to just talk through each song, and just yell the chorus' out. His voice is great, when he goes with the low range. When he tries to sing, its just plain old bad.

    lol!

totally agree with all the posts.

it's kind of like a train wreck in progress ... you know its going to be ugly and you can't stop watching.

for someone to go from such heights to such lows as a result of a VEEEERY LONG series of bad choices is a sight to behold.

but i agree, from what i last saw after 2002 it's not entirely bad. if ed and him and the rest of the boys get it together and do some stuff and just play maybe a bit more bluesy or something and dave sings his natural low key stuff and the backing vocals are the high stuff it could be a very interesting sound. it could be a decent show if dave stays away from the lycra and all shiny crap.

what is interesting about cvh is that when dave was in there you know, he wrote just as crappy lyrics as he did outside of vh, its just that there is something about the way that stuff was constructed that really made it shine.

the whole was greater than the sum of the parts.

I don't think Dave wrote crappy lyrics in VH. If you just sit down and read them without the song, yeah, it isn't poetry. But his lyrics usually fit the song very well, and you can't say songs like Hang'em High, Little Guitars, Secrets, In a Simple Rhyme, etc. etc. don't have good lyrics.

A lot of his solo tunes have good lyrics as well, it is just that the players behind him were not of the same caliber.
