Default The Potential Of A "New" Van Halen Album

This thread is PURELY speculation, I'd like to hear your views:

Let's say Ed is completely 100% sober. Let's say in late 2007 Ed and the boys make an announcement about being in the studio with Dave, Al, and Mike for the latter half of this year, for an album of all new, fresh material to be released in summer 2008, followed by a blowout 30th Anniversary World Tour from mid-summer to late fall 2009.

Van Halen has a huge classic rock and moderate modern rock radio hit in support of the new album. With that said, how well do you think a new Van Halen album of fresh, new material would fare with the public if it was the COMPLETE Classic Van Halen lineup?

My prediction: It would debut Top 5, that's for sure, but would have a tough time going Platinum. The new album, however, will lead to a successful tour to support it, as "The Mighty Classic Van Halen!" return for one last go around.

Like I said, pure speculation. I don't know what's gonna happen, nor do I honesly believe anything is gonna happen. Just like to see your thoughts

I would guess a very tough time going platinum. Selling records is a bitch these days.
If your scenario played out, certainly a successful tour would follow.
But this band will not ever be back as "mainstream", relevant band again. Most likely, this band will never be around again at all.

"Sammy is fat, Dave is bald, Mike is next in line to be the Pope, Eddie is a drunk, Wolfie is fat, Gary is gay, CVH is VH, Mike is VH, Sammy can outsing Dave on a tequilla hangover, Eddie is a meth head, How Many Say I is the worst VH song ever, Up for Breakfast is a close second, Dave was horrible at radio and everybody hates the assless chaps.

I think a new VH album could go platinum if there was good promotion, but more importantly lots of hype! Just the fact that the new music would feature the original line-up would make plenty of noise in the industry.

    It's a nice thought......

But I don't think we will ever see any new music (in album form) under the brand name of "Van Halen"....

Ed will go all Lars on us and yell at us about how all the illegal downloading is taking food off of Teen Wolf's table...

    j/k

It would need a hit and good buzz to go platinum... at least a prolonged tour... and maybe giving away the cd as part of the concert ticket (lots of artists have now done that)...

Unfortunately, I don't think that we're ever going to see Mike unless it's with Sam. It will probably be Dave with Wolfie, and who knows if they can get through an entire album. i hope so, but it's been along time since VH3. Not that they can't do it, but I wonder if they could get along thoughout the entire recording and writing process and still tolerate each other for a tour.

One good, rockin' single that "hits", six weeks out from an original album release from the original lineup......I think it could ship platinum.

    Good thread VHRocks!!!!
    I've thought about this too.
We definately need a new album from this band in 2008. Its the "obvious" thing, whether its with Mike or Wolfie on bass. I've come to the conclusion where I dont care whos on bass, I Just wanna new album, with the VH logo on it, a sticker on it saying "includes the hits....." blah blah!!! and a heap of promotion. If it gets that, and a healthy bit of material, theres no reason why it cant go Top 5 and go platinum.
I'm a Van Hagar fan, but I'm tired of playing the waiting game. Personally, Ed can make a "quicker" album with Dave than with Sammy. "FUCK" took just over a year to make, "Balance" took about 8 months, and the 3 songs from "BOBW" took 3 months or something.
I think Dave wants to do something special, and thats why he wants in or is in.
If Mike is in, its a huge plus +. Ive always had the beleif if an album does surface, the producer will be Erwin Musper or Glenn Ballard.

But we need an album, this is bullshit.

They can't rely on album sales anymore. If they do, it will almost be like a bar band passing out cassettes in the parking lot. They need to get with the times. Make a few songs available for download. Set up a text message system for updates and downloads. Do a massive overhaul of their website. Maybe even have an official VH MySpace for the album and tour. I'd even go as far as saying they should go the "street team" route.

Then, when they're on tour/doing publicity, go on Letterman, Leno, Conan, Craig Ferguson, and maybe even Jimmy Kimmel. Do radio, including satellite, interviews, and as many print interviews as possible with the whole band, individuals and pairs (Dave & Ed, Al & Mike, Mike & Dave, etc.) Then they need to hit not only the big markets, but the smaller markets as well, even if it means playing a county fair or casino, and they should charge accordingly.

They really need as much positive publicity as possible. They need to be seen to the point where people are close to saying: "Enough with the VH already!", ***BUT*** they need to have GREAT, not good, music to support.
They need to make it look like the fun Mighty Van Halen never stopped. They need to make people say: "Now *that's* a kick ass song/band! THAT'S the Mighty Van Halen!" And they not only need to sell it, they need to believe it, and make others believe it as well, and not just the people here or at the army, but people who only know Jump or Right Now.

VHIII managed half a million. Heck, I don't see why CVH can't surpass that mark on their 7th album. With good promotion/marketing, a couple of solid party songs, and a world tour, there's a mighty good chance the boys can pull it off and score a platinum. But your scenario must happen by 2008 or 2009 at the latest.
    DLR, circa 2001:

"Hey this is David Lee Roth and I promised you the news and here's the news.

About a year ago myself and the great Van Halen band played together once or twice and it sounded amazing!

In the following several months Edward and I, Edward Van Halen and me, David Lee Roth, created some of the most amazing, phenomenal - the hands fell off the clock ladies and gentleman and we wrote three astonishing tunes.

That was last July (2000) and since then I haven't been up to the studio, we haven't really been in touch and we haven't made any music, but I am holding forth, I'm in the shape of my life and I got the high note - I'm ready to go.

And I am positive for the future ladies and gentleman.

Stay tuned and I'll tell you what the future brings..."

The scope of popular music sales and marketing has changed drastically since VH last participated with a full-length album. CDs most certainly don't sell as well as they once did, so even a very well made, well produced VH record might not hit the double, triple, or quadruple platinum status that was almost guaranteed of their albums all throughout the 80s and early-90s; downloads and ringtones count now, though. There is room for either a Dave or Sammy fronted VH album and tour, but it would have to be extremely well planned and well marketed. That would require the active participation of a qualified producer, engineer, record company, manager (both business and personal), and tour sponsor. Unfortunately the volatile track record of VH and their current/former members points to such a thing as being nearly impossible. They're mostly nostalgia now and relevant only in the way that most music fans and critics prefer to pay tribute to their legacy.

We've been led to believe for eight years that VH would again be back in full force. All the crazy rumors about Dave in 2000 seemed to indicate that, Sammy's return in '04--which actually yielded some new songs and a tour--seemed to indicate that, and the Dave/Wolf tour announcement earlier this year seemed to indicate that. Examine what has actually been produced, however, these past eight years, and you can easily guess what the odds are of VH returning as you once knew them.

Won't happen. In the outside chance it does, the only people who will significantly notice new tunes will be us.

Debut in the top five? Come on, bud. You know better than that.

    The game 2008

They would have to bust through on MTV ala Santana, Aerosmith, Clapton. hell, the Stones have trouble selling albums and they have many more hardcore fans worldwide. They would have to hookup with Timbaland (I kid you not) in order top a million in sales.

It all would depend on the marketing and certainly on the first single released. The marketing for the 2004 tour was lousy. The marketing for what would have been this summer's tour was really bad. If you are going to do it, it has to be big.

As for the first single, it would have to be something out of the classic sound. Sound wise: No 'Without You' (although I did like it). Nothing like 'Learning to See' (I liked that as well).

Lots of other variables too but time will tell if they even get the original 4 back together again.
