Default Ed vs The Loon (who said what)

A common theme around here lately has been "Now that Ed's sobered up..." This is followed by any number of wishful thinkings, from Mikey returning, to a return to a professionally produced album, to the second coming of the mighty CVH.

Like you, I'm happy/proud/relieved that Ed has cleaned up his life. However, I've always believed that its a bit unrealistic to believe that 100% of the past 10 or so years worth of frustration is the result of the bottle only. Like it or not, some of Ed's mistakes are Ed's alone.

So here we go...ED or the Loon?

    MIKEY...Ed

I'll start here, because it seems to be the one most people are concerned with. I don't think a sober Ed means Mikey's back. There have been grumblings about Ed v Mike since the early eighties. I'll grant you that the Loon might have given Ed the liquid courage to finally act on it, but I think this was Ed's decision, and I don't think it's gonna change any time soon.

    David Lee Roth...the Loon

I'll never understand how firing Mikey has been viewed as completely irrational, but the idea of touring with DLR was never questioned. Honestly, who really believes that a sober Ed can coexist with DLR throughout a major tour? I think this was Ed at rock bottom saying, "What the hell?" Don't get me wrong...I'm holding my breath for a chance to see the two onstage together. I just have my doubts. And anyone who believes that Dave's return is a return to 1982 is just plum crazy. This is Ed's band now (more on that later) and while Dave has been invited to sing, he isn't going to be making the call on which M&Ms to exclude anymore.

Wolfie as the next Jack Bruce...the Loon

I've never been a Wolf-hater...and I don't respect those of you who have piled on this kid for being who he is...but I can't help but see this as parental pride magnified by the bottom of a bottle. That's not to say that we won't ever see Wolfie in VH...but I do believe that the idea of him stepping in for a 40 city tour was the Loon talking.

The disappearing shirt and the disintegrating shoes...the Loon

A little petty, but still...at the very least we're seeing that Ed's decisions regarding image were definitely influenced by his drinking.

    Which leads to...
The porn biz...[sadly] probably the Ed

I sincerely hope that Ed sees the porn bit as the image killer it is. Van Halen always had the ability to winkwinknudgenudge without crossing over into pure scuzz. It's an extremely fine line...and I honestly don't understand how they did it. I just know that I was always able to enjoy songs like "I'll Wait" or "Black and Blue" or "Hot for Teacher" without pulling the shades. Openly working with Ninn (who very well may be a genius in his field) moves the band closer to Crue territory.

The "Eddiefycation" of Van Halen...probably the Ed

What is Eddiefycation? It's "Eddie van Halen presents Van Halen with Eddie van Halen starring Eddie van Halen (produced by Eddie van Halen)." A little confession...I liked III...however, I would have loved to see what an established producer would have done with Gary. That being said, I think this is squarely Ed's band now. It's Ed's studio and more importantly, it's Ed's guitar. Over the past 15 or 20 years, VH has become the red and white stripes. I think Ed sees this as his legacy. I'm not saying it's right...but I'm also not going to promise to not buy tickets or albums.

As always...just my two cents (not legal tender). And again, I hope I'm wrong on some of these points. I would like nothing better than seeing Dave and Mike onstage next summer supporting a professionally produced album. I hold my breath every Superbowl hoping that the Mighty Van Halen will parachute into the half time show and return us to a time when Rock and Roll ruled.

    Later...grouch

Ed has to make his own decisions like anyone else does, I guess all we can do is be patient and wait to see what happens.

I don't think it's any secret that Dave did most of the controlling back then, but now (if it happens) I think Ed will have more control than he did then, maybe Dave has toned it down some and doesn't want to blow it this time.

I got to see Wolfie do the solo spot with Ed, and he really is a great player. It's in his genes. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. As far as Ed being a prideful parent, I totally get that, I'm the same way when it comes to my daughters' dancing, it's in her blood. It should be up to Ed & Valerie when it comes to Wolfie going on tour, they are his parents and they know what he can handle.

I loved it when he wore the disintegrating shoes, that shows that he's humble and that he hasn't let fame or fortune change him. I was told that those boots were the first pair of shoes he bought after he became famous and that they remind him of where he came from and keep him grounded. I totally respect that!

I really am indifferent about the whole porn thing.

If that is what Ed sees as his legacy, then he sees it as his legacy, I'm indifferent about that too. I will most definitely buy a ticket.

Well, that's my two cents worth, don't have anything else to say about that.

This is not for experts only, thank you very much, and I am just stating my own opinions about the matters at hand. It's what I see, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

    made ya type "Eddiefycation"

anyway...I don't pretend to be an expert. Just wanted to express (what I think is) a realistic view on the "Ed is sober, let's all pretend it's 1980 all over again" syndrome, and hopefully get a meaningful discussion out of it.

But if "ghey" is all that's out there, then so be it.
