Default Woman Sues EHarmony for Discrimination

    Jun 1, 7:17 AM EDT
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A Northern California woman sued the online dating service eHarmony on Thursday, alleging it discriminates against gays, lesbians and bisexuals.

    { Middle }

Linda Carlson said she tried to use the Internet site in February to meet a woman but could not based on her sexual orientation. When Carlson wrote to eHarmony to complain, the company refused to change its policy, according to the lawsuit filed on her behalf in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

The lawsuit claims that by only offering to find a compatible match for men seeking women or women seeking men, the company was violating state law barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

"Such outright discrimination is hurtful and disappointing for a business open to the public in this day and age," Carlson said in a statement.

The lawsuit names Pasadena-based eHarmony.com Inc., company founder Neil Clark Warren and his wife Marylyn, the company's former vice president, as defendants. It seeks class-action status, a jury trial and unspecified damages.

The company, which conducts extensive personality profiling before introducing couples with matching values and interests, denied the allegation.

"The research that eHarmony has developed, through years of research, to match couples has been based on traits and personality patterns of successful heterosexual marriages," a company statement said. "Nothing precludes us from providing same-sex matching in the future, it's just not a service we offer now based upon the research we have conducted."

Warren is a clinical psychologist who has written several books about dating and relationships.

And she wonders why she's discriminated against. j/k

But does she have to sue them? Can't she just find another match-making site? I'm sure there's tons of them out there.

eHarmony has nothing to apologize for, they don't focus on matching gay couples. It's that simple.

Sorry, biotch, you have no case here.

Is that really the way to meet people anyway? It's getting scary that there are people at a point that they feel they need to have a company match their profile to someone else's via the world wide web.
eHarmony should not have to cater to anyone, gay or straight. Remember when you had to ask someone out? This chick needs to go to a gay bar or something to find someone on her own. It's nobody's fault but hers if she can't find a "mate."
Maybe I can sue the gay bar because they don't have more straight people there.

You guys are out of touch. I've had some great experiences meeting normal, good looking women on Match.com that turned into relationships.

If either of you ever find yourselves single in your late 30's you'll find it's not even remotely as easy as it was back in the day. I went to college and then I bartended for several years after that. Meeting women then was no big deal....it was easy to take it for granted.

But now? Shit, it's a whole different ball game. It's one thing to just want to get laid, but it's another when you're looking for someone that you actually want to spend time with. Ain't nearly as easy as you may think.

Here's a hint.... If you see a business advertising on the 700 Club, avoid them like the plague.

    Why?

Because the 700 Club doesn't normally run commercials. The few things they DO advertise, it's because Pat Robertson directly benefits financially from it.

The only companies advertising recently: "e-harmony" and "PeoplePC."

I wouldn't advise doing business with either one. Homos, heteros, or otherwise.

I wasn't talking about everyone in general. I was just saying that the woman who is suing eHarmony should've put herself out there more instead of making such a big deal about it and suing them.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for, either just to hook up or to spend time with someone. Going out, online dating, phone sex, it's all good!

Shit, I haven't come across that in 20 years. And if I did I wouldn't be there long enough to see any commercials come on.

It's good for a laugh now and then. If you time your occasional viewing just right, you might even catch Pat making one of his legendary lunatic statements like:

"You say you're supposed to be nice to the Episcopalians and the Presbyterians and the Methodists and this, that, and the other thing. Nonsense. I don't have to be nice to the spirit of the Antichrist. I can love the people who hold false opinions but I don't have to be nice to them."
-- Pat Robertson, The 700 Club television program, January 14, 1991

"The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians."
-- Pat Robertson, fundraising letter, 1992

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with." –Pat Robertson, calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez

    Bonus Stupid Quote:

"Wait a minute, I didn't say 'assassination.' I said our special forces should 'take him out,' and 'take him out' can be a number of things, including kidnapping." –Pat Robertson, clarifying his call to assassinate Hugo Chavez

    Extra Bonus Stupid Quote:

"Is it right to call for assassination? No, and I apologize for that statement. I spoke in frustration that we should accommodate the man who thinks the U.S. is out to kill him." –Pat Robertson

This 'chick' could get a date rather easilly, if she did 3 things.....

    1. Go to a womens softball game.

    2. Go to an LPGA event.

    3. Put a bag over her head.

I suppose you're right about that. I'm 31 and have been married for 8 years. I didn't mean it to be derogatory to those who use it and take it for what it's worth. It's when people like this woman sue the company because they don't cater to her specific needs. It's a voluntary service.
No offense intended DD. I'm glad I'm not out there right now. It's a scary situation out there anymore. Reminds me of the Bob Rivers (I think) parody, "Hello, I Love You. Let's Get Tested for AIDS." Throw in all of the Valtrex commercials and such and you realize it's about more than just meeting an attractive person with a great personality.
