Default Radio broadcasters to pay $12.5M, give indie tunes some play

    http://www.usatoday.com/money/media/...a_N.htm?csp=26

WASHINGTON (AP) — Exasperated listeners weary of hearing the same songs over and over on the radio may have something to cheer about: a pair of innovative deals that could shake up the music playlists of some of the nation's largest radio-station chains.
Four major radio broadcast companies have tentatively agreed to pay the government $12.5 million and provide 8,400 half-hour segments of free airtime for independent record labels and local artists in separate settlements aimed at curbing the persistent practice known as "payola," sources told the Associated Press.

Payola — generally defined as radio stations accepting cash or other consideration from record companies in exchange for airplay — has been around as long as the radio industry and was made illegal following a series of scandals in the late 1950s.

Two Federal Communications Commission officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because final language has not been approved by the full commission, said the monetary settlement is part of a consent decree between the FCC and Clear Channel Communications (CCU), CBS Radio (CBS), Entercom Communications (ETM) and Citadel Broadcasting (CDL).

The settlement between the government and the four broadcasters was reached in conjunction with a separate deal designed to lead to more airtime for smaller record companies and their lesser-known artists as well as local musicians.

    Fixed my ass.

When 90% of the radio stations are owned by only four companies, new music suffers. Fucking Congress and the FCC have let this go way out of control. The law should be as it was in 1980.

And before someone chimes in with Satellite Radio, let me point out that we are starting to see more and more people die because they're listening to their Sat-radio and drive head-long into a tornado or flash-flood. That's because Satelite radio doesn't have local information on it. Worse, we're starting to see the same thing with automated FM stations that was all programmed in Chicago or New York and have only a skeleton staff to warn you about disaster situatios.

Oh, and without Payola we wouldn't have sufferd through J-Lo, Lyndsey Lohan and a bunch of other no-talent hacks **cough** the Simpson sisters **cough**. In short, we've been raped by big radio.

The idea of involving the government to make something "better" is a joke....when it comes to Independent bands, the internet's the shit....good music will always be heard, you just have to look for it and not accept being force fed shit music....we're the consumers, it's up to us, .....sad that the government has to step in......
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

30 Minutes a day is not enough.....

Maybe the fine should have been 1200 Million, instead of just 12 Million Dollars..... What will it take to get rid of stifiling playlists on Rock radio??
