    Default Cheap Guitars.

Anyone else here a fan of cheap guitars?? I am quickly becoming a huge fan. I bought a Squier '51 a few months ago, and I liked it so much, I bought a second. The '51 is a $150 guitar. Great guitar for the bucks, but money aside, these little guitars rock, and are very versatile. The overall sound of the guitar is quite raw, or maybe garage sounding, but I really love that. Obviously depends on the type of music you are wanting to play, but the '51 has a single in the neck, a humbucker in the bridge, and push pull for the humbucker to boot. One of them has a bit of trouble staying in tune, but I figure I will just put better tuners on it. I just recently oredered a Squier tele custom II, am looking very forward to getting it, Duncan designed p-90's in it, and from what I have heard the P-90's sound great..and the cost was $230. I have played Mexi strats that don't hold up to the '51's, and I have a feeling the tele will shape out about the same. Sometimes, you don't need to spend 1k or hell even 7 hundred to get a quality instrument....here is a big ass thumbs up to cheap guitars.

Right on! I bought one of the new cheap Kramers when they first came out on Musicyo. They were priced well under $200-with 2 humbuckers and a floating trem that is surprisingly good. A great guitar. I play it every day. I just don't see myself spending thousands on a quality guitar. Love the cheapos.

i don't know if you have heard of him. he's kind of a shy fellow, in some band not really that popular.

I too am a fan of the cheap guitar. Too many people get hung up on the minutiae of it all. How often have you seen someone going on about the right tone woods, the right windings and magnets in the pickups, the right value pots and on and on and on and then they whack it through a wall of distortion that would sound the same if they played a kazoo through it?!

I read an article on EVH once that really made an impression in this regard. He said something about a guitar being only "wood & metal". Once I built my first guitar from parts and figured out it only cost $400-$450 to make, I never bought a guitar new for more than that. I just came to the realization that after $450, the rest is markup. If one can learn the QA practices of setup, fret dressing, and proper care for a guitar, the cheaper OLP, Yo!Kramers, Jacksons, etc are all pretty nice guitars IMO (gotta have a Floyd Rose, though). Its one of the reasons why I think the guy running Mean Street Guitars is doing it right. Sure he's gotta be making some money, but he's putting together quality instruments for REAL prices [not some endorsement jacked value].

BTW, againstthewind, love your signature. I too live in the "mitten".

Yeah, exactly. I have always found that funny. I've read articles where people will say stuff like, "Well, I prefer all my guitars to be mahogany with a maple top, and I use the same Seymour Duncans in all of them, with a thousand extra windings, I replace the magnets with Alnico V, blah blah blah. I use the most expensive Monster Cable for the extra clarity on the high end. Then it goes into my ProCo Rat and into my JCM 900 with the gain at 9, and then an EQ with the mids notched..."

I don't have anything really cheap in my arsenal at the moment, but my best friend, who's also the bass player in my band, swears buy Fender Mexican Jazz's (mexico) and Jazz Specials (Japan) and they are really great basses. He buys them on eBay for $200-$400 and then tricks them out - pickups, tuners, bridges, etc. - with the money he's saved buying them so cheap. We've put them up against some really high-end basses and they sound just as good, if not better, in most cases.

I bought a discontinued tele model directly from the Fender warehouse about 8 years ago and did the same thing. It was hot pink I stripped it down, sanded it, had it painted at a body shop for $50 and the rebuilt it with DiMarzios and GraphTech hardware. This thing absolutely rocks now and people are always shocked because they're expecting it to sound like Merle Haggard! If I could only have one guitar out of my stable, it would have to be that one.

I bought a brand new Peavey Predator circa 1995 about 6 months ago. The best part is that I paid $99. That's right, the low, low price of $99 on Ebay and it wasn't used, just an in-stock discontinued new axe. I'm telling you this thing is a solid guitar....unbelievable bang for the buck. It stays in tune like a rock and it sounds fantastic whether it's played clean or otherwise. It's a strat style guitar and I wouldn't hesitate to play it out if I actually played out.

i consider wolfgang standards from ebay at about 800 - 1k a pretty fair deal my self.

though not anything close to a bargain indeed! nice find.

The pacific-rim Fenders, Gibsons, Jacksons and PRS guitars are pretty good for the money. But just like Audiophiles, some people just can't tolerate intonation, tone, and noise problems that are sometimes associated with the low-end guitars.
I totally understand - I love my mexicaster, but I just got a Charvel EVH (Black/Yellow) and it was NOT cheap.

I guess you get what you pay for.
