Completely agree about VHI, although I feel that 1984 is the pinnacle of their career with Dave - both in terms of sonically well produced and album playlist.
VHI and 1984 produced the band's half dozen most beloved (and overplayed) songs:

    Runnin' With The Devil
    You Really Got Me
    Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
    Jump
    Panama
    Hot For Teacher

When was the last time Van Halen played a concert without at least one of those songs?

"The past ain't what it used to be"

"Music is like candy. You throw out the rappers"

"Be careful what you wish for because you just might lose what you already have"

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

True.... But we can blame dj's (all the songs) and vj's (the 1984 videos) for having them overplayed. If they weren't, they'd still be cool as hell because they are great songs.

I agree that they are all great songs. Pretty cool that VH's two most iconic albums are the bookends of the original Roth era.

Van Halen, Dave is Back, Rarest Cover and Demos.
A cool compilation imo, and it's gotten a LOT of play time by me over the years.

The first track - Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers (live in '83) - was the version I made copies of for my old band to learn. I used to love playing this tune live!
Just heard another favorite of mine - Honolulu Baby - and am now listening to Summertime Blues, which is another version we used to play! Haha.

Just popped in the very first VH bootleg that I bought and sent away for - San Diego Sports Arena 1984 - and still get chills at certain parts.
Ed's rapid fire Spanish Fly type picking in the intro to Unchained, the two step overbends in the Hot for Teacher solo, the completely different solo in I'll Wait which had plenty of tapped harmonics and some tasty bluesy licks, and of course his balls out Eruption-ish cadenza solo.

Holy shit!!! He really hand some left hand pryrotechnics going on! As I said before, the 1-2-4 fingering patterns with variations therein were flat out outstanding. Combine the dynamics/muting/etc. and he was off to the races... I marvel at the piano tray bi-dextral segment as well. Completely original and ahead of its time. Love those licks (thanks to JohnnyB. for doing a video demo excerpt to show what the hell he was playing!) and wish he'd continue to explore that style.

Heaven & Hell - The Devil You Know

Dark, brooding and dripping with spurious evil. I love it. Really don't play it that often, but when I do I'm surprised how the plodding, monolithic songs are actually stuck in my head many hours later.

Not a drop of sunlight from start to finish.

Live from Radio City Music Hall is also a treat. A real barn burner.

I never gave Vai a chance until recently. Never heard anything apart from his time with Dave. Seriously, not one piece of music. I know he gets lumped in with the "wankery" epithet but this literally reduced me to tears...if that's wanking...I'm a wanker.
