    Default Peavey HP Special

Has anyone played a Peavey HP Special? It's suppose to play better than the Wolfgang.

It's a great guitar. I own two. I don't know if it is better than my Wolfgangs but it is just as good. You can also get more tones because the coils split.

Here is a video from Guitar World on the HP Special.

    it sounds pretty damn fine.

    the split coils are nice.

they lost something in the aesthetic depratment tho without the skewed oval look, the pointy horns and the weird headstock- but thats just because i'm a finicky designer.

why do people sell the wolf and this guitar as rock/shred only? it's just as capable in other areas as well. i've heard wolfs used in country and jazz sounding very cool.

i guess its an image thing.

I played one of the cheaper flat-top models a few months ago, and it didn't feel good at all... It wasn't set up, so it's hard to judge, but for $1300+, Peavey should at least take the time to make sure the Floyd is intonated and the action isn't 1/4" off the neck... The pick-ups sounded exactly like Wolfgang pickups.... If you already have a Wolfgang, it's not worth the extra cake to buy one of these.... Just my opinion....

Agreed. I had the same experience.

I too was a little put off by the HP Special I played a few months ago. Granted the thing was hanging on a wall and looks like a lot people had their grubby hands on it, but I've played some Axis guitars which were floor models and they stood up to that abuse rather well. This HP Special certainly didn't.

I will say, however, that out of all the guitars in that shop ... the HP Special felt like an old friend and that's a nice thing right there. It felt new but comfortable, you might say. Still, not impressive enough to consider it over anything I play now.

All the ones I've played needed a set-up badly, which is a shame, because both my Wolfgangs were ready to go right off the show room floor. But the pickups are very similar to the Wolfgangs in sound, plus have coil-tapping.
