Ah, I don't think that's a huge shot. Ed probably knows deep down inside that his playing was subpar. We were all there, we heard it. No big deal.

Sam takes pride in his stuff. He hated being out there delivering a less-than-usual product musically. So he's a little bitter about the way it went down.

I wish E would take it as a challenge and put out something up to his potential again.

Your probably right. I didn't get to see the '04 show. I'd just like for all of them to play music (together or seperate) and shut up.

I wanted to make a new thread about Edīs playing in the 2004 tour, but since this one is related............. Does anyone here think that Eddieīs playing was, yes, different but also excellent... more free & improvise... yes, it may have sound as sloppy or whatever, but it sounded free & fluid. I donīt know, I have six bootlegs from 2004, & I hear them pretty good: free & spontaneous. Before 2004 it sounded to perfect.... well, in 1998 (III tour) it was the best of both worlds!!

Itīs just me or Iīm a crazy free thinking musician!

Its you. There is a world of difference between improvisation and the incoherent noodling we got in 2004.

So itīs just me. May be youīre right. Anyone else? Incoherent noodling are not the words I use in a sentence with EVH..... again, it may have sounded different, but it sounded great to me. I donīt know why, but the way he played in 2004 made it more human & real. Besides, you canīt deny that CVH songs like SGMAD were great compared to some VH w/ Hagar songs. Only compared to the way he played them in the III tour = amazing!!!

It depends! Everyone has a good & valid opinion. But I really think he was exploring something different in 2004, that we mere fans are not able, yet, to understand!

I just saw the Columbus show last night, and I have to say that Sammy's assessment that The Other Half sounds closer to Van Halen than the 2004 tour did is pretty far from the truth. Given, Sammy and Mike sounded fantastic-Mikey even altered his normally bland solo section-I'll still take Ed on his worst night than Vic on his best night , at least when it comes to playing VH tunes. I love Vic as a player, and understand he takes a lot of scrutiny for the sheer fact that he is playing the role of the world's best guitar player in a glorified cover band, but I think that he should have given the songs a little more justice. I mean he didn't even attempt a solo on 5150-maybe not play the same one as Ed, but throw one out there. Otherwise, the show was fantastic, with the exception of the I Love This Bar cover-almost made me want to throw up. Great to see Mike, Sammy, and VH fans having a good time.

I agree. the oct. albuquerque show was good. his solo was not his usual and no he wasn't sloppy. he just played and it was fresh. it wasn't long but I was absolutely stoked over hearing something on the spot new from him. he did eruption and cathedral but it was the sweet little improv that made the show.

I'm sorry for you people that are offended by what Sammy has to say. I'm not saying that Sammy's perfect but from everything that I've read in tons of articles (some of which don't even mention Sammy's name), Eddie sounds like he needs rehab in the worst way!

Ed's playing , for the shows i saw, was average at times, brilliant at others and just plain bad on some. The 'bad' playing i refer to is when the notes and chords he played were incoherent, nonmelodic and unrelated to any song or structure he's ever done..in other words, just mistakes.
The avg playing was on some of the tunes where he was goofing off, which is completely fine with me, and the brilliant came from lots of the CVH tunes and some huge sam era tunes, but mostly on some solo spots. When i saw him at Borgata and he went off on a blues riff solo at the start of his solo section, i had goosebumps.
Would love to hear some of that!

Spot on assessment as I was there too. Vic is a decent guitar player but he is no Eddie Van Halen. Human Beings was a total disappoint. They're having a great time but come on Sammy, no way does Vic begin to compare to EVH especially saying his playing is better. Have fun, enjoy what you are doing with the Wabo's and Mikey but do not make Vic out to be more than he is. It's not fair to him and certainly not to EVH.

I'm a musician too and Eddie was playing some fresh stuff. I think he is literally bored playing the same riffs over and over again. Ed's playing has always evolved and he demonstrated this during the 04 tour.

Eddie changed some parts of "Humans Being" in 2004, and it sounded great in my opinion. It wasn't exactly like the recorded version, and I was pleasantly surprised.
