    Default Greatest Parental Wisdom

What's the wisest thing your parents ever taught you? What sticks and what do you say to your own kids that you got from your folks?

I remember I screwed up in middle school once and got the call home. My mom was waiting when I got home, let me know I was on restriction for two weeks and told me, "You will NEVER embarass me again!"

Lesson: It was my screw up, but it was the family name I was messing with...

    How about y'all?

"Get out, stay out, and don't come back until you get your head out of your ass."

This said as they dumped my happy butt and all my possessions off in Mobile, Alabama, a long way from home. It worked - still haven't gone home!

My father said, "No matter how good you are, there is always someone better."

This was more of a warning when getting into physical altercations, but it fits well in everything for those times when your ego starts to get the best of you.

"Can't never could do nothing"--always said this when I said I can't do something.

Funniest thing he ever said was when I was about 7. I would smack at the table. You know, not chew with my mouth closed. He used to always tell me to quit smacking. One night we were eating and I was smacking. He looked at me with a real pissed look and said:

"Boy, if you don't stop that smacking your mama's gonna have to get you off the wall with a spatula!"

Mom told me this a week before I started highschool:

"Wear a rubber. If you get into trouble and are arrested, make sure your cell mate has plenty of rubbers because I'm not bailing you out. If you screw up and get some girl pregnant or get arrested then you're on your own."

My Mom told me once "Don't sleep with a woman unless you are sure you want to spend the rest of your life with her."

Of course, I didn't follow that to the letter, but looking back there are a couple of escapades I wish I had avoided, and if those words had popped into my drunken mind, I probably would have avoided a couple of those instances.

My Dad's best advice? While I was taking a piss: Don't lean back too far, you're not holding onto much! This should be put on a sign in front of every urinal in mens rooms across the world, especially in bars. What is it about men after they get a couple of beers in them that makes them think they can stand farther away from the pisser?

Best advice from a teacher? It was my last day of school my Junior year in High School in Nebraska as we were getting ready to move to Colorado. My English teacher told me when I shook hands with someone to look them in the eye, and use a firm grip, give one or two solid pumps and then let go. This goes through my head every time I shake hands with somewone that I've never met before. I get much of my first impression of men when they shake my hand. Guys with that wet noodle feel when they shake my hand, or look away from me as we're shaking hands are not trustworthy in my opinion, and guys that grab my hand and squeeze with all their might while pumping the shit out of my hand, or they just keep holding the grip for a long time bug me as well. Also guys that try to hold their hand so that I have to shake their hand with my palm up so their hand is on top of mine bug me too. I won't do it.

Sounds like my dad was your teacher. Except my dad's never been to Nebraska & he's not a teacher. I too hate a "wet dishrag" handshake & a man that won't look you in the eye when greeting. It's just like saying "don't trust me". My 3 yr old son already knows that when greeting a man, you shake his hand. It doesn't matter if he knows you or not, if I speak to you, he's gonna stick his hand out. If you don't acknowledge him, he'll call you on it too. We're still working on the manners a bit.

As far as advice from my folks though. Be honest. There's a lot less to keep straight when you tell the truth.

I all ways heard this one "Do as I say not as I do/Because I said so" and the ever famous "Remember who you are and where you came from/remember your last name". Kinda the same line of don't fuck up the family name by doing something dumb.

Winning isn't the important thing. WANTING to win is the important thing.
