Default Babe Don't Leave Me Alone

So I've decided that this is one of the greatest unheralded Van Halen tunes EVER. There's something about this groove that just moves me. It really should've been on the first album in lieu of RWTD, or YRGM, or LD. Yep, I said it. In fact, I'm going further and saying this may be in my top ten VH songs of all time. I know, big words for an outtake. I fucking love this tune. Simple and crunchy. The three studio quality early Dave era tracks are, perhaps, dare I say, metal-ish? No, I didn't go there, did I?

Dave at his very best vocally. Just a great, great tune.

My VH bud Steve compiled a new CD of studio quality outtakes and one-offs...it's ALMOST like a new VH album. Well, kinda. Props go to sphill for being kind enough to send me the best quality version of IWSA I've heard yet, minus all the usual background hiss, still a little treble-high on the cymbals, but finally a decent tweaked copy of the infamous 5150 outtake. (please don't deluge him with requests, he's an admin elsewhere, go ahead and PM me, I'd be glad to share it with those who're interested).

He wanted to put on other tracks like Act Like it Hurts, Gentlemen of Leisure, Eyes of the Night, Down in Flames, , etc, etc...but those versions are just so raw, and he was trying to put together a 'studio' CD per se. As it was, IWSA barely made the cut even as the improved track...still a fairly raw recording.

The effort on my bud's part has got me re-invigorated on those '04 tunes. Ya know, Learning to See really isn't a bad tune at all, quite the opposite actually. I am envious of those very few east coasters who got to enjoy this track live, even if it did sound weird.

Plus I'm finally trying to assimilate TWILY and CGTSNM, which are tracks I've always shunned. He left Respect the Wind off the compilation because frankly, while it obviously qualifies as a studio-quality one-off, it's just a bit Phantom of the Opera-ish on the keys and far too long for our tastes.

So this'll be my VH for the next month or two, I'm sure, since I'm SO Halen'd out of late.

Track Listing - Studio Quality (or near) Outtakes and One-Offs

    Let's Get Rockin
    Babe Don't Leave Me Alone
    Put Out The Lights
    I Want Some Action
    Crossing Over
    Humans Being
Can't Get This Stuff No More
    Me Wise Magic
    That's Why I Love You
    It's About Time
    Up For Breakfast
    Learning To See

Fuck it, I'll pretend it's an all new Halen LP. Damn you Ed. Damn you for making me live in a fantasy world.

I like the song very much, also! And I agree with what you say about Learning to See. It is by far my favorite of the three, and one of my favorite from Sam.

Have you downloaded and listened to the "Zero" demo? Ed's tone is not quite the same (due to it not being his gear he was playing through), but the quality is ultra-high compared to other bootlegs and demos.

I'll send ya Big Trouble if you can hook me up with that improved I Want Some Action

Big Trouble is my personal favorite VH outtake. Nice lookin' compilation too. I love how you started it off with "Let's Get Rockin'" That was pretty smart.

I scored this double CD of early EVH practice tapes, and the entire studio CD with the tunes you guys are talking about. I can get them to sound as good as VH1's sound by adjusting my EQ. I don't know who's interested, but I got a full plate, so when I find the box, I'll see what I can do. At least you guys could buy the beer for all that work.

Anyway, who cares what I say

Babe, Don't Leave Me Alone....what else can I say about this song? I LOVE THIS SONG!!! Like you said, simple, yet groovy song. The bass line is classic Van Halen; Michael Anthony being perfect at the perfect time in the song. The simple, pop/rock guitar riff that's so damn catchy that, ladies and gentlemen, it'll make you wanna dace.

Big Trouble, my other favorite unreleased VH song...typical song, really...however it rocks. It rocks pretty fucking hard. It's got that attitude of youth, girls and having fun all being thrown at your way, the Classic Van Halen way. Can it get any better?

There are at least 3 different studio versions of "Babe Don't Leave" me alone that VH did.

"Big Trouble" is on the Gene Simmons Demos and the Warner Bros Demos. On the Simmons demo, the song is actually called "Big Troubles," and Dave does sing the plural.

I'm not sure a studio version of "Believe Me" has ever surfaced.

I could be wrong, but I'm certain "Believe Me" was released off the Cherokee Demos from '74. As I said, I could be wrong, but I'm kinda positive about this one.

Even though Down In Flames is only recorded live (as far as I know) you still gotta throw it on that cd. I'm convinced that would have been a live VH staple if they would have thrown it on VH 11. (Obviously Down In... is my favorite unreleased track.)

Always have, my brotha. Always have. Too Zepish, so I understand why they left it off, but still a cool tune.

Young And Wild is the shit too. Mike and Dave do a killer job during the chorus, and Ed is just...Ed!
