    Default Artists of Distinction

I read in a Mick Mars interview once where he said "I may not be the best player in the world, but when you listen to my sound/style, you know right away that it's me" (not verbatum quote)

While some singers in POP may be awesome technically, how distinctive are they? I mean really? Same with guitars and drums.

    Question:

Who is a singer or musician that if you heard them all by themselves with just their instrument or voice, you'd be able to name them right away. I'm talking about a distinctive sound/style. And I'm just not talking about virtuosos of the different instruments, but they can be included.

I can think of lots. But here are the rules:

    1. You are only allowed to name 1 example in each post.

    2. You can't post again until someone posts after you. I hate it when people give all the good answers in one post.

I'll go first. . . (I'm staying away from my temptation to go with the obvious examples who've inspired the existence of this website)

Alex Van Halen as a drummer. He's one of a VERY few drummers that actually has his own TONE on drums. That's AMAZING to me...

    Great examples,

    Now I'll go again . . .

Rob Halford. If I heard him without any back-up I think Id know right away that it's him.

How 'bout Robert Plant as a vocalist? There are a LOT of imitators out there but all of them pale in comparison. Again, to me, it's the TONE of his voice that sets him apart...

David Gilmour's voice is pretty damn distinctive.
