    Default Water softeners

I have well water w/ iron in it. Clothes are turning orange. Stains on sinks, tubs & FIXTURES. Any of you got any experience w/ this. BTW, it's a new 4" well.

Soft water service is worth the price. If you like preserving your bath fixtures, sinks, tubs, showers, clothes, and hair, that is.

Depends on if you wanna install it and maintain it yourself or have a company do it and bill you monthly. The apparatus will cost you 1-2k bucks up front usually, if you're wanting to own the gear yourself; or a company will charge you rent on what's needed, plus the cost of monthly salt pellets and occasional equipment checks (there's usually two services offered, you can pick one or both - drinking water, and soft water just for your pipes/baths/toilets and such).

Monthly charge on rented gear costs between 50-70 a month here in Cal for both kinds of water.

I'm a do it myself guy so I'll purchase & install it. At 1-2 grand it's a pretty big investment so I'm trying to get as much info as possible up front. Culligan came out & did an in home test that pretty well mirrored what the county test showed when the well was drilled 6 mos. ago. Culligan wanted 3K. I'm hoping to do it a little, no a lot, cheaper.

I have had the same problem, our well water was staining sinks, toilets, tubs everything. I bitched like hell to our builder and he put in a water softener for us. It has done miracles nothing is stained anymore, we just go through 2 bags of rocksalt a month which costs around $10.00 bucks total. I have mine set up to refresh every other day at 2am in the morning.

The softner we have is a no name bastard brand. I am not surprised by this considering we did not have to pay for it. But it works really well. Also we were getting small debris like real little pebbles and granuals of sand in our water which was causing our faucets to drip and mess up. He replaced all of them and he put a whole house water filter in. It's just a cannister with a big filter in it on the main line. The filters costs $4.99 for 2 of them and the last 3 months each, they are very cheap.

We finally got offered city water in our subdivision but it is a $1,200 connection fee. When my softner finally dies I will probably switch to the city water instead of buying a new water softner.
Have you bought a box of powdered water lately?

I personally prefer soft water, especially after moving out of the city, taking a shower is much more enjoyable now!! I grew up on city water, also hard water, and for me, once you have enjoyed soft water, you will never go back, even if I ever had to go back to city water again, I would still have a softner. You need half the soap for a shower, and the laundry too, and it seems to come out cleaner, smelling better, just all around a better deal. Will never go back to hard/city water again!!
